Though, within the festive season, there were pockets traffic logjam around Lagos, it could not be compared with what commuters and motorists face on a regular basis on Lagos roads.

Prime Business Africa spoke with some commercial vehicle drivers, who shared their experiences during the festive season.

Ajibola Ahmed, a commercial driver, explained that there was not much heavy traffic experienced because the roads were basically free.

“If you are smart and fast you could even almost make two trips between Oshodi and Mile-2 in an hour,” Ahmed said.

The major problems we experienced was that there were not much passengers, so buses were sometimes running almost empty or half.

Another driver who simply gave his name as Johnson, said he experienced traffic as usual around Festac/Apple Junction/Okota axis.

Johnson, said on Christmas day, it was really very difficult moving from the Festac Link Bridge because there was a major gridlock around the Diamond Estate gate.

“Too many cars were trying to access Shoprite and Golden Tulips at the same time causing a serious traffic jam, fortunately, because of that initial congestion, the Apple Junction where most road users used to be terrified of became free.”

Sadly, with that much level of traffic experienced on that day, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials, Police Traffic Wardens and other FRSC and other relevant agencies meant to ensure the smooth flow of traffic were nowhere to be found.

Oshodi/Ikeja axis traffic only reduced a little, meaning that if you had been spending two hours on the road inside traffic you now spend maybe about an hour or less but you will definitely experience traffic.

Recall that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority LASTMA promised Lagosians to be calm because they (LASTMA), will professionally handle every traffic situation within the state to ensure that it does not escalate.
