Old Nollywood, a term that brings waves of nostalgia to fans and enthusiasts alike, has long been celebrated for its classic storytelling and unforgettable actors.
However, in recent weeks, the plight of two beloved Nollywood veterans, Amaechi Muonagor and John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, has exposed a harsh reality that raises essential questions about the industry and its actors’ welfare.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelThe distressing news emerged as Mr. Ibu took to Instagram to share his painful journey through a harrowing health crisis. On October 18, 2023, he revealed that he had been battling a severe illness for weeks, with treatments proving ineffective, with the possibility of amputating his leg if the ailment continued to resist treatment.
In his own words, “If they cut off my leg, where would I go? Pray for me, I don’t want my leg to be cut off.” Not long after Mr. Ibu’s appeal, another veteran actor, Amaechi Muonagor, shared his story of suffering from paralysis and the aftermath of a stroke.

Muonagor had been an iconic figure in Old Nollywood, but his health had taken a devastating turn, rendering him unable to move or walk independently. The actor was recorded on his hospital bed as he explained how he got paralyzed after suffering a stroke.
However, because his condition showed no signs of recovery, he was sent to Nnewi Teaching Hospital in Anambra, where he is still receiving treatment.
Amaechi went on to explain that seven months ago, on a day fated for misfortune, he had just wrapped up a taxing shoot alongside his colleagues Emeka Ani, Patience Ozokwo, Rita Edochie, and Ebele Okaro on a movie set. Just as he was preparing to hit the road in his car, he found himself suddenly struck by a debilitating stroke.
The distressing experiences of these two Nollywood legends shine a spotlight on several crucial questions. Firstly, one must wonder whether the Nigerian film industry has adequate health insurance policies and support systems in place to cater to the needs of its actors, especially during their twilight years.
Furthermore, it raises concerns about why aging actors seemingly resort to public financial support when facing critical health challenges. While the Nigerian film industry has made remarkable strides in recent years, it is essential to address these issues.
Old Nollywood may have given us countless cherished memories, but the distressing situations of these two actors prompt a much-needed reflection on the industry’s responsibilities and the measures it must take to support its aging veterans in times of need.
