The Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, has warned new and returning students of the University against belonging to secret cult groups, indulging in hard drugs, cyber crimes, and indecent acts.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelProf. Igwe stressed that the University does not tolerate such because they are ills ravaging the lives of average youths today, adding that students found guilty are liable for punishment.
“Belonging to a secret cult, cyber crime, indulging in hard drugs, irresponsible dress codes, among others, are frowned at, as students found guilty stood the chances of befitting punishments which included expulsion,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor, who spoke during the 49th matriculation ceremony of the University urged the new matriculants to prioritize their studies while they continue to abide by the rules and regulations of the institution.
The matriculation ceremony which took place at every faculty in the institution on Saturday, 28 September 2023, was one geared towards officially inducting the students into the institution and giving them a good orientation on what phase of life awaits them as students of UNN.
Prof. Igwe reminded the matriculants of the need to celebrate their arrival at the University and to press toward the bigger tasks of ensuring they leave with good grades and degrees from the University, upon graduation.
He maintained that the University which has had a profound reputation for sound academics and discipline since its establishment in October 1960 has remained undaunted in the continuation of imparting these qualities in the lives of students in years to come, and therefore, it was necessary that they braced up for the journey ahead.
Prof. Igwe, Who was represented at the faculties by the Deans went on to congratulate the newly admitted students of the 2022/2023 academic session of the University as being lucky among the 30% admitted, against the higher percentage of unadmitted applicants for the year 2023.
At the Faculty of Arts, the Vice Chancellor was represented by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Paul Obi-Ani.
According to him, additional information and advice on how to successfully navigate through various aspects of the university system has been made available to them during their orientation exercises.
He highlighted that the University places a high premium on character and behaviour which is why certificates are awarded to those who have been “found worthy in character and learning.”

Further more, he encouraged the students to live peacefully with other members of the university community and abide by the rules and regulations of the university.
“violation of any of the rules could result in the suspension or outright expulsion of a student from the university,” he warned.
In the same vein, the Registrar of the university, Dr. Celine Ngozi Nnebedum, represented by Deputy Registrar of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Godwin Nnadi urged the students to check their Jamb CAPS status to ensure it is reading, “Admitted” in order to avoid issues later on.
“The university will not recognize anyone who has not gotten an admission letter from JAMB. Therefore all students must ensure that their CAPS are in other or they may proceed to lay complaints for those who are still having issues in the Registrar’s office in their various departments,” She advised.
A few of the matriculating students who spoke to our correspondent expressed their joy in making it to the institution adding that they are committed to putting in their best throughout their stay in the Institution.
One of the students admitted to study Theatre and Film Studies, Mr. Chukwuebuka Onugwu, expressed his happiness about his matriculation. He stated that he intends to combine his academics and his interest in football. According to him, “I am the current Director of Games (DOG) of my Class and I think that combining the two will help me achieve my dreams.”
Another fresh student from the Department of Political Science, Miss Ifenyiwa Obimdi, expressed her excitement about making it to the institution, adding that she plans to maintain a good study culture to make good grades for productivity. She stated that she will abide by the school rules and regulations.
