The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and the Lagos State University (LASU) have emerged as the most preferred choices for aspiring students.

The rankings were recently announced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) during an ongoing policy meeting chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Andrew Adejoh.

For several consecutive years, the University of Ilorin has maintained its position as the top choice among UTME candidates. In 2022, the university received an impressive 73,749 applications, securing its first-place ranking.

This consistent preference can be attributed to the institution’s sterling reputation for academic excellence, quality faculty, and conducive learning environment.

While the University of Lagos held the second position in 2020 and 2021, it experienced a slight decline in popularity, landing in the third spot for 2022.

Nevertheless, it has quickly rebounded and regained its traditional second position in the current admission process. UNILAG’s rich heritage and diverse academic programs continue to attract a large number of prospective students.

A noteworthy development in the rankings is the emergence of Lagos State University (LASU) as a preferred choice, securing the third position with 55,964 applicants.

This marks LASU’s debut in the top ten list, signifying its growing reputation and appeal among UTME candidates. The university’s strategic location in Lagos State, combined with its commitment to academic excellence, has contributed to its newfound popularity.

New Entrants on the List:

Two institutions have made a notable entry into the top ten list for 2022. The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), located in Kaduna State, secured the ninth position with an impressive 41,323 applicants.

This prestigious military institution offers specialized training programs and has gained recognition as an excellent choice for candidates aspiring to serve in the armed forces.

Additionally, the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, in Ekiti State, made its mark by attracting 53,235 applicants. This recognition highlights the institution’s commitment to providing quality education and its growing prominence in the Nigerian academic landscape.
