US Warns Israel To Boost Humanitarian Aid To Gaza Or Risk Losing Military Assistance

US Urges Israel to Address Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

The United States has intensified its diplomatic pressure on Israel, issuing a stark warning that failure to significantly improve humanitarian aid access to Gaza could lead to cuts in US military assistance. This comes as the Biden administration grows increasingly concerned about the deteriorating conditions for civilians trapped in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

In a letter co-signed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary ,Lloyd Austin, the United States expressed “deep concern” over the worsening situation in Gaza. The letter urged Israel to take immediate steps to ease restrictions on humanitarian aid and ensure that civilians in Gaza have access to basic necessities.

Humanitarian Aid Restrictions Causing Crisis

According to the letter, sent just two days ago, Israel has blocked or delayed nearly 90% of humanitarian aid movements in Gaza. “This is unsustainable,” the letter stated, referencing the desperate conditions in northern Gaza, where Israeli military offensives have driven mass displacements. Over 1.7 million people have been forced to flee to southern Gaza, resulting in severe overcrowding and increasing the risk of outbreaks of disease.

“We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe,” the letter warned, adding that the US government is alarmed by the impact this is having on civilians. It also called on Israel to end its “isolation” of northern Gaza and to allow free movement of aid between the north and south.

Military Aid at Risk if Israel Fails to Act

The Biden administration’s message was clear: Israel must act swiftly to reverse the worsening humanitarian crisis, or face consequences that could affect the country’s military support from the US. The letter cited existing US laws that prohibit military assistance to countries obstructing the flow of American humanitarian aid, signaling that a failure to comply could result in reduced aid.

“Israel needs to act within 30 days to significantly improve the situation in Gaza,” the letter continued. It highlighted the importance of reopening aid corridors and facilitating the movement of essential supplies like food, water, and medicine to areas that are currently inaccessible.

Potential Shift in US-Israel Relations

This diplomatic move, first reported by Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, reflects a possible shift in the relationship between the US and Israel. While Washington has long supported Israel militarily, the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza has prompted a reassessment of the US approach.

An unnamed US official was quoted as saying, “Our support for Israel remains strong, but we cannot ignore the civilian suffering in Gaza. There needs to be a balance between military objectives and humanitarian responsibilities.”

Israel’s Response Awaited

As of now, the Israeli government has not publicly responded to the US letter. However, the next 30 days will be critical in determining whether Israel complies with the demands or risks losing vital military assistance.

Meanwhile, calls for increased humanitarian access continue to grow from the international community. The United Nations and other organizations have repeatedly emphasized the need for greater aid delivery, warning that the crisis in Gaza is reaching a breaking point.

The pressure is now on Israel to take action, as the humanitarian situation continues to worsen with each passing day.
