The Republican Party has claimed control of both chambers of the United States Congress following key wins in the House of Representatives from races in Arizona and California, according to CNN.

With these wins, Republicans have secured a 218-seat majority in the House out of 435 seats, completing a legislative sweep alongside their projected majority in the Senate, and setting the stage for President-elect, Donald Trump’s administration to operate with Republican control across Federal Government.

The dual victories come shortly after Trump’s landslide win in the November 5 presidential election over incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s election, paired with Republican control of Congress, gives the incoming administration a significant advantage in advancing its policy priorities, from immigration and tax reform to regulatory cuts aimed at bolstering economic growth.

“This is a beautiful morning in Washington. It is a new day in America,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, celebrating GOP’s victory on Tuesday, even before final results were confirmed. Johnson emphasised that the 119th Congress would be “ground running to deliver President Trump’s agenda” and promised to work closely with Trump administration to “unleash a new golden age in America.”

For the Senate, Republicans claimed a majority with 52 seats, reversing the narrow Democratic majority held over past two election cycles. Expanded Republican control in Congress will be pivotal for Trump, enabling him to confirm his cabinet and judicial nominations with minimal opposition.

The shift in power signals a change in Washington’s political landscape. Under Trump’s leadership, Republicans are expected to push forward an aggressive agenda, including large-scale deportations, tax cuts, and reduction in federal regulations. With both chambers aligned with the administration, party aims to quickly turn its policies into law, building on Trump’s promise to “make America great again.”

For Democrats, loss represents a significant setback after a hard-fought campaign cycle. Party had previously held a narrow control of the upper chambers, allowing it to enact key portions of its legislative agenda. However, with a Republican-controlled Congress, Democrats are expected to face challenges in advancing progressive policies.

With unified control of the legislative and executive branches, the Republican Party is poised to bring sweeping changes to country’s domestic policies, beginning with a sharp pivot toward conservative priorities.
