Washington Post Faces Subscriber Crisis Amid Endorsement Controversy
The Washington Post is experiencing a major subscriber crisis as more than 200,000 digital readers have canceled their subscriptions, reportedly in response to owner, Jeff Bezos, blocking the paper from endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
According to two Washington Post insiders cited by NPR, this wave of cancellations accounts for around 8% of the paper’s 2.5 million subscribers, including both digital and print.

Former Washington Post Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli expressed concern over the cancellations, which were still rising as of Monday afternoon. “It’s a colossal number,” he told NPR. “The problem is, people don’t know why the decision was made. We basically know the decision was made but we don’t know what led to it.”

For Brauchli, this crisis symbolizes the intense polarization in today’s political landscape. “This shows just how polarized the times we’re living in have become,” he continued. “People are channeling their energy into a single action, whether that’s subscribing or unsubscribing.”
Subscriber Backlash to the Washington Post’s Decision
The sudden surge in cancellations appears to be linked to readers’ frustrations over what they perceive as political bias.
Many subscribers reportedly feel that the Washington Post’s decision not to endorse Vice President Harris is a departure from the paper’s editorial independence.
Encouragement to Remain Subscribed Despite Differences
Despite his criticism of the paper’s decision, Brauchli has publicly discouraged further cancellations, urging readers to consider the wider impact of their actions on journalism as a whole.
“Cancelling your subscription sends a message, but it also impacts the newsroom’s ability to deliver quality journalism. We need a healthy, independent press in these times,” he said.
A Symptom of Broader Political Division
This cancellation crisis at the Washington Post underscores the challenges major media outlets face in a polarized climate, where editorial decisions can prompt immediate and strong reactions from readers.
As the Washington Post’s internal debate continues, it remains to be seen how the paper will navigate the subscriber fallout and whether it will re-evaluate its stance on endorsing political candidates.
