Donald Trump’s Fundraising Surge

Former President Donald Trump has managed to out-raise President Joe Biden for the second consecutive month.

In May, Trump’s campaign, along with the Republican National Committee (RNC), collected $141 million, surpassing Biden’s $85 million.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, commented, “President Trump’s record-breaking fundraising numbers prove Crooked Joe Biden’s witch hunts against President Trump, skyrocketing inflation, and the illegal border invasion have united the American people around the fact that another four years of Biden will mean the end of our country.”

Financial Gains Despite Legal Troubles

Trump’s recent felony conviction has surprisingly bolstered his fundraising efforts. Following his conviction on 34 felony counts, Trump raised $53 million online in the first 24 hours and $70 million in the first 48 hours.

Impact on Campaign Dynamics

The Biden campaign entered June with $212 million on hand, but Trump’s fundraising surge has narrowed the financial gap significantly. Trump now boasts a campaign war chest of at least $170 million.

Brian Derrick, a Democratic strategist, noted, “Yes, Trump is raising a lot more money now, and that should scare people. But at the end of the day, Biden has the funds that he needs to run a really strong campaign.”

Trump’s Online Donation Surge

The Trump campaign reported that one-quarter of the contributors in May were new, highlighting the impact of his legal battles on mobilizing his supporter base.

Biden’s Spending on Campaign Infrastructure

Despite the financial gains of the Trump campaign, the Biden campaign has used its funds to build a robust political infrastructure.

Dan Kanninen, Biden’s battleground states director, said, “What’s in his FEC report does not translate to boots on the ground tomorrow. That was built over time that Donald Trump cannot get back.”

Mega-Donations and High-Dollar Events

Trump’s post-conviction fundraising also saw mega-donations, including a $50 million contribution from billionaire Timothy Mellon. Additionally, Trump’s February fundraising dinner at Mar-a-Lago raised $50 million.

Looking Forward

Trump’s main super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., has planned a $100 million summer advertising blitz starting in early July. Democratic fundraisers expect Trump to catch up in fundraising efforts, reminiscent of the 2012 race when Mitt Romney steadily closed the gap with Barack Obama.

Jon Reinish, a Democratic strategist, expressed concerns, “It’s nerve-racking to see the money race even out. That was supposed to be one of Biden’s real advantages. He’s also been spending money for months and that doesn’t seem to be moving the needle much in terms of polling. Hopefully, that changes as we get even closer.”

Biden’s Continued Fundraising Efforts

Biden has been active in fundraising, holding a $30 million event in Los Angeles with Barack Obama and Hollywood stars. He also hosted an $8 million backyard fundraiser with Bill Clinton.

Political Impact of Trump’s Conviction

Speculation continues regarding the lasting political impact of Trump’s conviction. While it has energized his donor base, the effect on voters remains uncertain. The Biden campaign aims to maintain its financial edge and continue its outreach efforts as the election approaches.
