Biden had been nominated as candidate of the Democratic Party for the upcoming presidential election.

Prime Business Africa reports that the decision to pull out of the race followed mounting pressure from Democrats who felt he wasn’t suitable anymore, especially after the last debate with Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, where he was adjudged to have performed poorly.

Biden said his decision to drop the reelection bid is in the best interest of the party and the country.

The 81-year-old 46th president of the US added that he would now focus on completing his remaining six months in office.

Part of his statement reads: “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

He expressed gratitude to all who have worked hard for his reelection.

Biden has endorsed Kamala Harris, the current vice-president, to be the new Democratic nominee.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made.

Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump,” Biden further stated in via his X handle on Sunday.
