In a decisive victory on Saturday, former United States President, Donald Trump, has secured a clean sweep in South Carolina’s Republican primary, defeating former Governor, Nikki Haley, by a significant margin in her home state. The former President who lost the 2020 elections to Biden, garnered 60.5% of the votes, while Haley trailed with 38.8%. The former President’s triumph was declared at 7 pm. local time, extending his winning streak.

Trump’s Victory Speech

In his victory speech, Trump wasted no time in outlining his future ambitions, stating his intent to reclaim the White House from President Biden in the upcoming general elections which is in November. “We’re going to look at Joe Biden and we’re going to look him right in the eye…Get out, Joe, you’re fired,” Trump asserted confidently.

Haley Refuses to Accept Defeat

Despite calls from several Republican politicians for Haley to accept defeat and support Trump, the former Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration remains resolute in her bid for the presidency. Haley has vowed to stay in the race, citing her commitment to offering voters a genuine alternative. She aims to draw a sharp contrast with Trump, particularly on foreign policy.

In her post-results speech in Charleston South Carolina, Haley painted a picture of a deeply divided America, accusing both Biden and Trump of exacerbating these divisions. She labeled Trump’s and Biden’s rhetoric as divisive, stating, “One calls his fellow Americans fascists…the other calls them vermin.” Haley positioned herself as a candidate offering a different vision, asserting, “We can’t afford four more years of Biden’s failures or Trump’s lack of focus.”

Despite her loss in South Carolina, Haley remains undeterred, expressing doubt over Trump’s ability to defeat Biden in November. Her campaign manager, Betsy Ankney, emphasized their belief in the American people, urging Republicans to join their cause. “If Republicans want to win, if Republicans want to save this country, we ask them to join us. We’ve got one shot to get this right,” Ankney stated.

Trump’s victory in South Carolina propels him closer to securing the Republican Presidential Ticket by Super Tuesday on March 5. The next primary is set to take place in Michigan on February 27, where Nikki Haley, who has lost three Primaries to Trump in Iowa, New Hampshire and now South Carolina, will be hoping to get a breather by winning the poll.
