Tuesday night’s highly anticipated presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump left many questioning the real impact of the candidates’ performances. While political pundits may have their opinions, the key question remains: Who gained the most ground with voters?
Despite the heated exchanges, both candidates struggled to sway undecided voters, leading to uncertainty about how the debate will affect the polls.

Kamala Harris entered the presidential debate with a clear agenda: to prove that her presidency would bring a better future than the past four years under President Joe Biden. Her challenge was to make voters see her not just as a continuation of Biden but as a leader in her own right.
“I want the American people to know that we have a plan for the future, one that ensures their security and economic stability,” Harris said confidently during her opening statement.
However, while she emphasised her youthful energy and composure, her broader vision seemed unclear to many viewers.
Vision Lacked Clarity
Though Harris succeeded in keeping Trump on the defensive throughout much of the debate, her long-term vision appeared somewhat disjointed. One voter, interviewed afterward, commented, “She was calm and put Trump on the spot, but I’m still not sure what her presidency would look like beyond what we’ve already seen.”
Trump’s Debate Challenge: Stabilising His Image
For Donald Trump, the presidential debate was a crucial moment to reassure voters about his leadership abilities. After a series of public controversies and critiques, Trump needed to project stability and strength.

“I’ve been through a lot, but I’ve also done a lot for this country,” Trump declared during the debate, aiming to remind voters of his past achievements.
Erratic Behaviour Raises Questions
However, Trump’s unpredictability was once again on display. At several moments, he appeared agitated and struggled to stay on topic. This led some commentators to question whether he effectively reassured voters.
Political analyst Sarah Coleman noted, “Trump’s base expects the fighter, but for undecided voters, his lack of focus might have raised concerns.”
Missed Opportunities
Trump’s failure to capitalise on key issues such as the economy and immigration left many feeling that he had missed a chance to gain ground.
Independent voter John Bennett said, “I wanted to hear more about what Trump would do about inflation and immigration, but instead, he got sidetracked.”
Key Questions Left Unanswered
The presidential debate left viewers with two pressing questions: “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” and “How would a Harris presidency differ from Biden’s?”
Unfortunately for both candidates, neither provided clear answers. Trump spent much of his time reacting to Harris’s provocations, while Harris struggled to distinguish herself from her current role as vice president.
Voter Reactions Post-Presidential Debate
A focus group conducted after the debate revealed mixed reactions. While Harris impressed some with her poise, others were unconvinced.
“I liked her style, but I still have questions about what she stands for,” said one undecided voter. Another added, “I felt like Trump was trying too hard to be combative. I wanted to hear more about his plans.”
The Difference Between Messaging and Language Strategy
One key takeaway from the presidential debate was the distinction between strong messaging and a solid language strategy. Harris excelled at delivering confident statements, but some felt her messaging lacked depth.
“Harris had some great lines, but I’m not sure she really connected with what I care about,” said voter Linda Carver. “I want to know how she’ll make my life better, not just how she’ll win an argument.”
Similarly, Trump’s combative approach resonated with his core supporters but failed to attract undecided voters who were looking for more substance.
Impact of the Debate on Election Results
While Harris and Trump both had strong moments, the presidential debate did not seem to create a major shift in voter sentiment. Many undecided voters were left asking the same questions they had before the debate.
Political commentator Greg Taylor summed up the night’s outcome: “Both candidates delivered their messages, but the real question is whether their performances will translate into votes. So far, it doesn’t look like this debate changed much.”
What’s Next After the Presidential Debate?
With the presidential debate behind them, both Harris and Trump face the same challenge: turning their debate performances into actual votes.
For Harris, this means sharpening her vision and making it clear how she would lead differently from Biden.
For Trump, it means focusing on key issues that resonate with undecided voters, rather than getting caught up in personal attacks.
As the election draws closer, both candidates must remember that it’s not just about delivering the right message—it’s about connecting with voters on the issues that matter most. Only time will tell who can truly win over the hearts and minds of the American people.
In the coming weeks, the focus will remain on how both candidates adjust their strategies. Will the debate make a lasting impact? Only the voters can decide that at the ballot box
