Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, has etched his name in history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess. Onakoya’s feat was confirmed through a post on his official X account, where he shared his journey and motivations.

“We have done it. We’re pushing to 60 hours guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going,” Onakoya wrote, exuding determination and resilience.

Surpassing the previous record set by Norwegian players Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad, who played for 56 hours and 9 minutes in 2018, Onakoya aimed even higher with a target of 58 hours. As of now, the challenge, held at New York City’s Times Square, has surpassed the 56-hour mark, establishing Onakoya as the new record holder.

But this record-breaking endeavour was about much more than personal achievement for Onakoya. His primary goal was to raise funds and awareness for the education of underprivileged children across Africa. “We have a fundraising goal to meet for the education of African children around the world. This is our why – the reason we are doing this. Let’s demonstrate to the world the incredible power of love. Together, we can make this happen,” he shared passionately.

Collaborating with his US counterpart, Shawn Martinez, the two National Masters teamed up for this monumental challenge under the banner of Chess in Slums Africa, Onakoya’s foundation. Martinez, a renowned New York City chess legend and coach, joined the marathon after about 23 hours, reinforcing the duo’s commitment to breaking the record together.

The rules stipulated that the record attempt must be by a team of two players, with the time measured in hours, minutes, and seconds. Onakoya and Martinez not only aimed to break a record but also to highlight the enduring and inclusive nature of chess as a unifying force.

The outpouring of support for Onakoya’s endeavor has been overwhelming, with notable figures like President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and musicians Davido and Adekunle Gold rallying behind him.
