Trump Vows To Overhaul US Trade System, Impose More Tariffs On Foreign Countries

United States President, Donald Trump, has vowed to overhaul the country’s trade system to protect the interest of American workers.

He also promised to impose more tariffs on other countries to enrich the country.

Trump stated this during his address after being sworn in for the second term as president at ceremony held in the U.S. Capitol building, Washington DC on Monday, 20 January.

The 47th U.S. president said: “I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families.”

“Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” he added.

Trump said that for that purpose, his administration will set up the External Revenue Service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. “It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign source,” he emphasised.

“The American Dream will soon be back and thriving like never before,” he assured.

Since his reelection in November 2024, Trump has been hinting on putting America first in his policies.

He had during campaigns, given a hint on his aim to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, and an additional 10 percent on Chinese goods, if they did not do more about illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the United States. He also spoke about raising tariff on Chinese imports to as high as 60 per cent upon assumption of office.

During his inaugural speech, Trump said that to restore confidence to the federal government, his administration will establish a new Department of Government Efficiency,” tagged DOGE. The DOGE which will play advisory role, will be led by billionaire businessmen, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Trump also promised tackle inflation crisis and bring down costs across the country. He also hinted at returning America again to the status of a manufacturing nation, and also ramping up efforts to increase the scale of domestic oil and gas production and export energy to other parts of the world.
