United States President, Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders that target what he referred to as “transgender ideology” within the military. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described the move as critical for the effectiveness of U.S. armed forces.
“To ensure that we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military,” Trump declared at a Republican retreat in Miami.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelThe executive order reverses policies allowing transgender individuals to serve openly in the armed forces, a change first introduced in 2016 under President Barack Obama. Trump has long criticised such policies, calling them detrimental to military cohesion.
Policy Details and Justification
In the signed order on Monday, Trump argued that “radical gender ideology” has weakened the military. He stated, “Adoption of a gender identity inconsistent with an individual’s sex conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honourable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle.”
The policy document also asserts, “A man’s assertion that he is a woman, and his requirement that others honor this falsehood, is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member.”
The order further prohibits the military from endorsing what Trump referred to as “un-American” theories. These include interpretations of America’s founding documents as inherently racist or sexist and discussions promoting gender diversity.
Defense Secretary’s Remarks
Trump’s newly appointed Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, supported the move. Speaking during a Pentagon ceremony to welcome him into the role, Hegseth said, “Thank you for your leadership, Mr. President. We will execute!”

Hegseth, a veteran and former television commentator, has faced criticism for his lack of administrative experience. However, he echoed Trump’s stance on maintaining traditional values within the military.
Response from Critics
Civil rights groups have been quick to denounce the executive order. Sarah McBride, a representative of the Human Rights Campaign, said, “This is an attack on thousands of brave Americans who serve our country despite facing prejudice. This decision undermines our military and our nation’s values.”
Former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who served under President Biden, had voiced his support for inclusive policies. Earlier this month, Austin stated, “Any military that turns away qualified patriots who are eager to serve is just making itself smaller and weaker.”
Impact on Military Recruitment and Diversity
Transgender Americans represent a small percentage of the military, with estimates suggesting approximately 15,000 out of over two million service members. Critics argue that barring them from service could hinder recruitment efforts, especially during a time when the U.S. military is struggling to meet its personnel needs.
Trump has consistently argued that the military’s primary focus should remain on strength and readiness. “We cannot allow distractions to compromise the safety of our nation,” he said in Miami.
Additional Announcements on Defense
In the same series of orders, Trump reinstated service members previously dismissed for refusing COVID-19 vaccinations and called for the construction of a U.S. version of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.
“We need to immediately begin the construction of a state-of-the-art Iron Dome missile defense shield,” Trump said. “It will be made right here in the USA.”
However, experts have questioned the feasibility of such a project. The Iron Dome system is designed to counter short-range threats, unlike the intercontinental missiles that pose the primary risk to the U.S.
Political Divide Over Military Policy
The policy change highlights the ongoing political divide in the U.S. over LGBTQ rights. Democratic-led states have expanded protections for transgender individuals, while Republican states have implemented restrictions on medical care and education related to gender identity.
Trump concluded his speech by emphasising his commitment to a “strong and traditional military.” He added, “This is not about politics. It’s about protecting our nation and keeping our soldiers focused on winning.”
This decision is likely to reignite debates over inclusivity in the military as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
