Trump Expresses Confidence In Buying Greenland

Prime minister Frederiksen, who has consistently rejected the idea of incorporating Greenland into the US, has said Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and that only the 57,000 citizens of the island can decide their future.

President Trump first made his plans known during his first tenure in 2019 as part of his Greater United States policy. He has called the merging of the island into the United States an “absolute necessity” due to the strategic location of the island in the Atlantic Ocean and its untapped natural resources.

“I don’t really know the claims Denmark has about it,” President Trump said. “It will be a very unfriendly act to deny the United States efforts to acquire the island,” he continued.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has turned down this notion citing the acquiring of the island as “Greenland’s business”. He also expressed his views on a partnership with the United states in defence and mining.

Since the 19th century, the United States has considered, and made, several attempts to purchase the island of Greenland from Denmark, as it did with the Danish West Indies in 1917. The island is said to be rich in natural resources like uranium, iron, which are needed for several important things and are becoming globally expensive.

Greenland is strategically the shortest route between the Northern American continent and Europe. Even though it’s home to the United States’s military space facility, it’s still an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
