1. 36 Governors Reject Tax Reform Proposal

The 36 state governors of the federation have demanded the immediate withdrawal of the National Tax Reforms Bill.

While speaking during the National Economic Council – Nigeria’s highest economic advisory body – meeting on Thursday, the governors asked President Bola Tinubu to withdraw the Reforms Bill from the National Assembly for more comprehensive consultations.

2. Meeting between FG and Striking Varsity Workers ends in Deadlock

The meeting between the Federal Government and the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, which was held at the Federal Ministry of Education on Thursday, ended in a deadlock.

The meeting which was led by former Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, was aimed at discussing issues around the ongoing strike of the unions.

3. Nigeria to Spend N500bn on Abandoned TCN Projects 

The Nigerian Government is set to spend over N500 billion to complete more than 100 abandoned projects for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) across the country.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this known during an official visit to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company on Thursday, to engage with stakeholders, including the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, to identify and tackle obstacles hindering optimal performance in the power sector.

Nigeria international, Calvin Bassey, has opened up on the moment Lionel Messi inspired him to choose to play for the Super Eagles instead of the Three Lions of England.

The Fulham defender who was born in Italy to Nigerian parents but moved to England as a child and grew up in Newham, was eligible to play for any of the two countries, including Kenya, but in 2021 he committed his international future to playing for Nigeria when he accepted a call-up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and debuted for the country in a 0-0 draw against arch-rival Ghana.

5. Ondo Poll: Candidates to Sign Peace Accord

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced ahead of November 16 Ondo State governorship election, that candidates in the race will sign a peace accord on November 8.

The peace accord signing ceremony which is facilitated by the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, is aimed at ensuring that candidates pledge to a peaceful and violence-free election.

6. Wreckage of Crashed Helicopter found

The wreckage of the helicopter that crashed last Thursday into the Atlantic Ocean while conveying workers of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited from Port Harcourt has been found by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).

This was made known in a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, on Thursday.

7. Naira Depreciates to ₦1,765/$ At Official Market

The Naira depreciated to ₦1,675.49 per dollar at the official market on Thursday from ₦1,631 per dollar on Wednesday, according to the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM).

8. Health Workers to suspend 7-day warning strike from midnight

In the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and in the general public interest, the Joint Health Sector (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals Association (AHPA) has said that it would suspend its seven-day warning strike effective from midnight Oct. 31.

This was disclosed by the National Chairman of JOHESU, Mr Kabiru Minjibir, in a communiqué jointly signed by Mr Martin Egbanubi, National Secretary of the union on Thursday in Abuja.

9. Bill to Upgrade Federal College of Education Asaba to University of Technology Passes Second Reading

The bill to upgrade the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba to a Federal University of Technology has passed its second reading in the Senate yesterday.

The bill which was sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, PDP, Delta North, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, is titled “An Act to Amend the Federal Universities of Technology Act, Cap.F23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to Provide for the Upgrade of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba to the Federal University of Technology Asaba, and for Related Matters, 2024 (SB. 570)”.

10. NGF Admits to Hunger in the Land

Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) which comprises all the state governors in the Federation have admitted the fact that there is hunger in the country.

The governors while in a meeting in Abuja which lasted from Wednesday night to the early hours of Thursday, 31st October, said they were aware Nigerians were hungry but also expressed appreciation of what they described as reforms of President Bola Tinubu.

11. Court Sentences 2 men to 7 years Imprisonment for Drug Trafficking

A Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, sentenced two men, Abbah Yahaya and Abbah Abdullahi, to seven years imprisonment for trafficking 104 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, popularly called Marijuana.

When arraigned before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in a charge marked FHC/L/748c/2024, on 15 October, the two convicts had pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy and trafficking the said prohibited weed.

12. Ten Dead in Oyo Collapsed Building

A building which collapsed at Jegede Olorunsogo, in Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State has claimed the lives of about ten people.

The incident which happened in the early hours of yesterday, left many others injured.

13. Govt to Arraign 76 EndBadGovernance Protesters

Nigerian government prepares to arraign 76 #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters today, November 1.

According to reports, the Nigerian government planned to arraign 76 protesters, out of which 66 are minors before Justice Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 1, 2024.

14. PDP Warns Ondo State Residents Against voting APC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has warned Ondo State residents not to vote for All Progressives Congress (APC) in next month’s governorship election.

According to a statement by the PDP’s spokesman in Ondo State, Kennedy Peretei, the party said Governor Aiyedatiwa plans on increasing tuition fees for students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba. He also said that the increment is being delayed so as not to affect the party’s fortunes in the forthcoming election.

15. Ondo State Pensioners Urged to Vote Aiyedatiwa 

The Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has directed its 28,000 members to vote for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa who was described as a pensioner-friendly governor, in next month’s governorship election.

This directive was given by Ondo NUP Chairman, Comrade Johnson Osunyemi at this year’s Pensioners’ Day celebration held in Akure.

16. Ex-Senate President, Wayas, Set for burial  Nov 30

Three years after his demise, the body of former Senate President in the Second Republic, Dr. Joseph Wayas, will be buried on 30 November.

According to reports, Wayas aged 80, died in a London hospital on 30 November 2021 and was brought to Nigeria on July 10, after over two years in a United Kingdom (UK) morgue.

17. PDP Criticizes Ekiti Lawmakers’ Planned Retreat To Canada

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has criticised a planned trip by members of the State House of Assembly to Canada.

The spokesperson for the PDP caretaker committee in the state, Jackson Adebayo, condemned the proposed retreat as a “wasteful spending” particularly as state workers are still struggling with economic hardship.

18. Flood Kills 321 In 34 States, with 740,743 Displaced Individuals 

The National Economic Council (NEC) said on Thursday that the floods which ravaged different parts of the country recently, affected 34 states and 217 local government areas, resulting in the death of 321 persons with 740,743 people displaced nationwide. It also added that 1,374,557 individuals were impacted.

This was disclosed by the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, while briefing State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja after the NEC meeting presided by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

19. Northern Nigeria Struggle Amid Seven-Day Blackout

The Northern Nigeria has been engulfed in complete blackout for the past one week. This has greatly affected homes, businesses, schools and hospitals and has caused frustration and discontent among residents.

This has thrown countless numbers of businesses and households into crisis with many struggling to get alternative sources of electricity which are either exorbitantly sold or potentially hazardous.

20. Social Investment programme expands its reach to 25m Nigerians

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun,  said on Thursday that the social investment programme has expanded its reach to 25 million vulnerable Nigerians from five million households.

The programme which involves direct cash transfers to individuals on the social register who are verified through biometric identification, is paid through bank accounts or mobile wallets.
