1. Minimum Wage: Strike Inevitable from Monday if FG Fails to Offer Reasonable Amount – Labour

Organised Labour has revealed that there might be a nationwide strike starting from Monday, June 3 if the Nigerian government does not come up with something reasonable for the minimum wage.

The Organised Labour will have a meeting with the Federal Government today, May 31 to finalise discussions on the minimum wage. According to the Labour unions, the outcome of today’s meeting determines if a strike might start on Monday.

2. Army Defence Headquarters Reacts to Killing of Soldiers In Aba

The Army Defence Headquarters has reacted to the killing of five of its soldiers deployed to Abia State to protect its citizens. The Director Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, Major in a statement accused members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the act. He vowed that the military would be fierce in its response to the killing.

The soldiers were reportedly killed while combating unknown gunmen said to be enforcing sit-at-home in the state on Thursday. IPOB had earlier declared that there will be sit-at-home on Thursday, 30 May, to mark the Biafra Day.

3. Keyamo Suspends Enforcement of Collection of Helicopter Landing Levies

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has temporarily suspended the enforcement granted to Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Limited by the Federal Government to collect helicopter landing levies.

In a statement signed by the Head of Press in the ministry, Odutayo Oluseyi on Friday, May 31st in Abuja, it was stated that the suspension was to begin May 30, 2024.

4. Restoration of Former Old National Anthem ‘My Priority’ – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has defended his decision on the restoration of the Nigeria’s old national anthem, saying it is his ‘priority’ despite the criticism that greeted the decision.

Tinubu stated this in a meeting with the Arewà Consultative Forum in Abuja on Thursday. “Some people say is that your priority? It’s my priority. I agree with the National Assembly. If they make law, I’ve got to obey that law, or we disagree openly and close the chapter,” Tinubu stated.

5. Case Against Alleged Mosque Arsonist Slated for July 4

The case against Shafi’u Abubakar who reportedly set a mosque on fire thereby killing 14 people is slated to hold on July 4 at an Upper Sharia Court sitting in Kano.

Abubakar aged 38, was charged with mischief by fire, causing grievous hurt and culpable homicide.

6. Alliance of Women Right Groups Seeks Release of Chioma Okoli

An alliance of over 150 women rights group known as Womanifesto has called for the release of Chioma Okoli who has been detained since September 2023 over her alleged defamation against Erisco Foods Limited.

The group in a statement condemned the continued detention of Okoli which has resulted in her loss of pregnancy, coupled with psychological trauma.

7. David launches Meme Coin $Davido

Nigerian music artist, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido has ventured into the cryptocurrency space with the launch of his own meme coin, $Davido.

The coin which is currently priced at 0.007783USD was announced on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 and has gained popularity ranking number 1 on DEX screener.

8. Cavani Retires From International Football

Uruguayan player, Edinson Cavani on Thursday announced his retirement from international football at the age of 37.

Cavani is Uruguay’s second all-time leading scorer and third most-capped player, with 58 goals in 136 appearances.

9. Presidential tax committee recommends N800/$ Customs duty rate

The Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms has recommended N800 per dollar Custom import duty rate for the rest of the year.

The Chairman of the Committee, Taiwo Oyedele disclosed this yesterday while speaking on the activities of the tax panel in Lagos.

10. NANS Seeks Transparency In Disbursement Of Student Loans

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to prioritise transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the student loan.

The National President of NANS Pedro Obi made the call in a statement released on Friday. Pedro Obi urged the Federal Government to appoint people of unquestionable integrity to oversee the disbursement of the loan.
