2. Economic Council Recommends Temporary Suspension Of Fuel Subsidy Removal
The National Economic Council (NEC) has advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to temporarily suspend the plan to remove fuel subsidy until all preparatory plans with at various levels, including states and the incoming administration are concluded.
Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, stated this on Thursday after the Valedictory NEC meeting, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the State House, Abuja.
Ahmed, however, said the Council agreed that the subsidy regime must be removed eventually as it is not sustainable. Read more
3. Opposition Parties Lost Presidential Election Because of Bad Strategy – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari says that major opposition political parties lost the 2023 presidential election because they deployed bad strategies informed by overconfidence that they would win.
He claimed that while the All Progressives Congress (APC) worked hard to retain power during the elections by blending confidence with caution, the opposition parties were basking in euphoria of “false hope”.
The president who spoke on the election outcome on Thursday during a meeting with APC governors at the state house, Abuja, knocked the opposition parties for failing to accept defeat.
4. Tinubu Urges APC Governors To Work With Party To Elect 10th N’Assembly Officers
President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has urged governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to work with the party leadership and lawmakers on the election of principal officers for the 10th National Assembly.
Tinubu made the appeal in Abuja when the APC governors paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday.
5. Export Promotion Council Targets N5bn from Non-oil Revenue in 2023
Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Dr. Ezra Yakusak, on Thursday, said the council has set a target to generate over $5 billion from non-oil export in 2023.
Yakusak also disclosed that the country’s non-oil products export amounted to $1.34 billion in the first quarter of the year (Q1 2023), representing an increase of 8.50 per cent over the $1.24 billion recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2022.
6. AfDB Secures $525,000 Grant to Strengthen Fintechs in Africa
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed a $525,000 grant agreement with Africa Fintech Network (AFN) for the setup of the Africa Fintech Hub, an online portal that would serve as a one-stop shop for all fintech activities in Africa.
The agreement was signed on 4th April 2023 with the Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI) billed to provide funding and technical assistance to the Africa Fintech Network to host and manage the Fintech Hub.
The hub is a digital platform that would enable fintech associations across Africa to pool resources and knowledge, strengthen relationships and partnerships, as well as showcase the work of fintech on the continent, including those which are female-led or owned.
7. $2.4bn Oil Theft: Malami Dismisses Claims of Missing Money
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, has dismissed claims that Nigeria lost over $2.4 billion in revenue from the alleged illegal sale of 48 million barrels of crude oil exported in 2015 to China.
Malami who appeared before the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating the alleged sale of 48 million barrels of crude oil amounting to over $2.4 billion and crude oil export to global destinations from 2014 to date, described the allegations as baseless, unfounded, and lacking in merit.
8. Fidelity Bank Posts 34% Growth in Gross Earnings, Declares Dividend
Fidelity Bank Plc has recorded a 34.4 per cent growth in gross earnings to N337.1 billion in the 2022 financial year.
This was driven by a 45.2 per cent growth in interest and a similar income of N295.6 billion.
This was revealed in the bank’s 2022 Audited Financial Statements released on the Nigerian bourse on Thursday. Read more
9. Court Refuses Request to Postpone 2023 Census
Abuja Federal High Court has refused to grant a request for an order to postpone the national population and housing census scheduled to hold from May 3 to 5.
During the court sitting on Thursday, the judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, refused to grant the application, and instead asked the applicant, Omotuyi Ademola, to put the defendant, the National Population Commission (NPC), on notice.
Justice Ekwo, who acknowledged the applicant’s motion moved by his counsel, Victor Opatola, for an interim injunction to postpone the conduct of the 2023 Census, however, ordered him to put the NPC on notice for the commission to appear in court and show cause why the applicant’s motion should not be granted.
10. Court Grants FG Leave to File 9 New Grounds Against Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Nigeria’s Supreme Court has granted leave to the Federal Government to file nine new grounds of appeal against the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
A five-member panel of Justices led by Justice John Okoro on Thursday granted the leave while ruling on the motion by the counsel to the federal government, Mr Tijani Gadzal.
