The assist was an atonement of some sorts for Elanga who had wasted a great chance to create a scoring opportunity when he shot wide instead of squaring the ball to his teammate.
Eight minutes into the second half, Forest doubled their lead after a brilliant run and execution from Wood who joined Forest in the summer.
Wood made the first game by manager Nuno Espirinto Santos a memorable one as he rounded Martin Dubravka in the 83rd minute before slotting the ball into the gaping net.
The defeat was the fifth for the Toons in seven games in all competitions this season.
The Toons are seven points adrift of the top four in seventh place after Tuesday’s setback.
