Tinubu, World Leaders Congratulate Trump As US President-elect

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has joined world leaders in congratulating Donald Trump on his re-election as the 47th President of the United States of America.

Trump, who contested on the platform of the Republican Party, emerged victorious after winning over 270 votes required to clinch the White House seat.

The US 2024 presidential election took place on Tuesday, 5th November. Trump defeated his rival, Democrat candidate, Kamala Harris, to complete a stunning political comeback.

In a statement by Bayo Onanuga, his aide, President Tinubu noted that the election reflects the trust and confidence the American people have placed in his leadership. The Nigerian leader commended Americans on their commitment to democracy.

He said he looks forward to strengthening the ties between Nigeria and the United States amid the complex challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world.

“Together, we can foster economic cooperation, promote peace, and address global challenges that affect our citizens,” Tinubu stated.

He expressed belief that, given President Trump’s experience as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, his return to the White House as the 47th president will usher in an era of earnest, beneficial, and reciprocal economic and development partnerships between Africa and the United States.

While noting the United States’ influence, power, and position in determining the trend and course of global events, the Nigerian leader expressed optimism that President Trump will bring the world closer to peace and prosperity.

Earlier before Trump’s official confirmation as winner of the 2024 presidential election, World leaders rallied to applaud Donald Trump as after his speech claiming victory which is considered a stunning one in the US election victory over Kamala Harris.

In a message shortly before Trump’s official confirmation as winner, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, described the victory as a historic return to the White House, heralding a new era.

“Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!” said Netanyahu in a statement issued by his office,” Netanyahu stated.

China

On her part, China said it would uphold US.-China relations in a way that promotes peaceful coexistence.

“We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular briefing.

“We respect the choice of the American people,” it added.

France

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated “President Donald Trump”, saying he was ready to work with him “with respect and ambition” like “we managed to do for four years”.

In a post on X, Macron said that the relationship with Trump, who is leading the US presidential vote, would “take account of your convictions, and mine”, adding: “For more peace and prosperity.”

Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, congratulated Donald Trump on his “impressive victory” and said he hoped his presidency would bring “just peace in Ukraine closer.”

“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer,” Zelensky said in a statement posted on social media.

India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Trump’s “election victory”.

“Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory,” Modi wrote on social media platform X. “As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ali, have also congratulated Donald Trump for winning the US presidential election.

In a statement on X, Starmer said the US is UK’s closest ally, and that he looks forward to working with Trump on shared values.

“Congratulations President-elect Trump on your historic election victory. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead,” the statement reads.

“As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.”

Ali said with Trump in the Oval Office, Ethiopia will strengthen its relationship with the US.

“Congratulations to President Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump) on your election victory and comeback. I look forward to working together to further strengthen the relationship between our two countries during your term,” Ali said.
