A Federal Commissioner in the Commission, Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, had reportedly while representing the RMAFC chairman, Mohammad Shehu, at the presentation of the reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, in Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday, said that an upward review of the remuneration packages for political, public and judicial officers was due since January 1, 2023.

She was reported to have said that the 36 states Houses of Assembly needed to fast-track the amendment of relevant laws to give room for upward review of the remuneration packages.

However, the Commission’s spokesperson strongly denied it, saying it is still in process.

According to provisions of the constitution, neither the Federal Government nor President Tinubu can increase salaries of public servants without the backing of 2/3 of all 36 States Assembly and the National Assembly.

Talks of increasing salaries of public officers comes at a time Nigeria is having revenue problem coupled with heavy debt burden which has led to experts advising the government to cut costs of governance.
