Tinubu Approves Payment Of N12b For Super Eagles, Other National Teams’ Allowances, Salaries

Reprieve has come the way of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the payment of outstanding money owed the national teams and other sports under the previous administration of General Mohamadu Buhari (retd).

This much was disclosed in a statement on the X (formerly Twitter) handle of Tinubu’s Media Centre on Sunday.

A breakdown of the allocation shows that the cash incentives will take care of the salaries owed the coaches of the Super Eagles, as well as payment of allowances and pledges made to the youth females, and Under-20 national team.

The statement read thus: “President @officialABAT has approved the payment of N12 billion outstanding backlog for Nigeria’s National teams of various sports, which includes Super Eagles and others.

“The payment entails the clearing of the senior national team coach salaries running up to 15 months, payments of allowances and promises due to the senior national teams, females, and Under-20 national team.

“This is coming at a time when the Super Eagles of Nigeria are preparing to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, which is billed to start later this month.”

The approved sum of N1.5bn for the prosecution of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt had not been released by the former government
