Created by Alexi Hawley, The Rookie has been a hit with viewers since its debut in 2018 and has quickly become one of ABC’s most viewed scripted series, even hitting its 100th episode milestone during the upcoming season.

The Rookie is led by the talented Nathan Fillion, who has a long-standing relationship with ABC after his successful eight-season run on the network procedural Castle.

In The Rookie, Fillion plays the role of John Nolan, a 40-year-old rookie police officer at the Los Angeles Police Department. Inspired by real-life police officer William Norcross, who joined the LAPD in his mid-40s, Hawley crafted a compelling drama that has captured the hearts of viewers.

Last year, The Rookie also spawned a spin-off series called The Rookie: Feds, and when the original show moved from Sunday to Tuesday, it saw a 40% increase in total viewers.

Hawley expressed his excitement about the possibility of a crossover between the two shows, noting ABC’s “seismic vote of confidence” in moving them to Tuesdays at 8pm and creating a seamless two-hour block of programming.

The renewal of The Rookie marks the third season on ABC’s slate to earn a renewal, following Abbott Elementary and Grey’s Anatomy.

The talented cast  includes Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, and Tru Valentino. Valentino, who plays Officer Aaron Thorsen, was upgraded to a series regular in season 5 after first appearing on the show in season 4.

Fillion and Hawley’s working relationship goes way back, as the pair previously worked together on Castle and now serve as executive producers on The Rookie alongside Mark Gordon, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross, and Terence Paul Winter.
