Supreme Court Upholds Election Of Gov Umo Eno

The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Umo Eno of the Peoples democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.

The apex court led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji gave the ruling on Thursday after dismissing the appeals filed by candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Akan Udofia, Albert Bassey, and John Udoedehe, respectively, challenging the outcome of the March 18 2023 governorship election.

The three parties challenged the qualification of the governor for the election. They alleged that the governor forged his senior secondary school certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The governor, however, denied it.

The governorship election tribunal had in September affirmed the election of Governor Eno.

The Court of Appeal in Lagos upheld the judgment of the tribunal on the matter.

The apex court in a unanimous judgment held that the appeals lacked merit
