In 2021, the South Korean drama “Squid Game” captivated audiences worldwide with its grim portrayal of a dystopian society where capitalism exploits the desperate for the entertainment of the wealthy. Fast forward to Reed Hastings, the rich tech founder of Netflix, and the streaming giant’s attempt to capitalize on the success of “Squid Game” takes an unexpected turn with “Squid Game: The Challenge.”

This reality competition series brings the essence of the original show to life but sheds most of its social commentary and all of its mass murder. As Netflix endeavours to transform its hits into lasting intellectual properties, “The Challenge” is just one facet of a multi-pronged strategy to keep the “Squid Game” phenomenon alive.

Borrowing the structure and aesthetics of the original, “Squid Game: The Challenge” features 456 contestants competing for a $4.56 million prize through a series of childlike games. The familiar pink jumpsuits, mock playgrounds, and Escher-like staircases are all meticulously recreated on a U.K. soundstage. However, unlike the original, the deadly nature of the tournament is downplayed, and the show leans more towards being entertaining than offering a societal critique.

“The Challenge” maintains an indirect relationship with its inspiration. Contestants recognize iconic sets and terminology from the original series, playing along with orchestrated familiarity. However, the show doesn’t explicitly acknowledge that the cast members are aware of these elements because they’ve seen them on TV.

While introducing new games and twists to keep participants on their toes, “The Challenge” appears to assume that its viewers are already acquainted with the “Squid Game” universe.

The standout feature of “The Challenge” is its diverse and expansive cast, sourced from various locations like America, Australia, and Italy. As the show progresses, it shifts from its initial grand scale to a more intimate focus on a dwindling number of stars.

Some participants exhibit familiarity with reality show dynamics, while others, like a former newspaper editor and a doctor with a tattoo for each grandchild, bring unique and genuine qualities to the competition.

However, the emotional investment in these personalities comes at a cost. While the show occasionally injects humour to deflate its own drama, the high stakes — not life or death but still intense — push contestants to their limits.

The ruthless game design forces them to betray each other or succumb to blind luck, resulting in emotional breakdowns, tears, and threats of vomiting.

The central question arises: Can a reality show based on “Squid Game” capture the gripping intensity of the scripted version without diluting its powerful societal commentary? “Squid Game” remains a singular achievement, while “The Challenge” becomes a more straightforward representation of the stress that many reality concepts impose on their subjects.

Nevertheless, the show can’t escape the dystopian fact of its own existence — a commentary invited into precisely what it was meant to critique.

The first five episodes are set to stream on Nov. 22, followed by four episodes on Nov. 29 and the finale on Dec. 6.
