The Blues were one of the few opponents Cristiano Ronaldo had not managed to score against in the Premier League, despite his history with the west Londoners. That changed Thursday night.

The Portuguese’s 101st league goal for United galvanised his team after a disappointing first hour for the Reds. Chelsea had controlled most of the game and took the lead through Marcos Alonso after a scoreless first half.

It could have been a third consecutive Premier League defeat to equal a club record was instead Ralf Rangnick’s first point against a top-four opponent since taking interim charge of Manchester United.

Despite the late rally and 1-1 draw at the end of the game, United are now certain to miss out on Champions League football next season as they can only finish the campaign with 64 points.

Meanwhile fourth placed Arsenal already have 60 points whe today’s opponents have 66 points with two games less played by the London sides.
