Join our WhatsApp ChannelSuper Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has assured Napoli striker Victor Osimhen that he remains his number one choice striker despite the possible return to the national team fold by Odion Ighalo.
Rohr is spoilt for choice in the Super Eagles attack with Kelechi Iheanacho, Paul Onuachu, Taiwo Awoniyi, Terem Moffi and Cyriel Dessers all competing for one or two roster spots but has vehemently stated that the ‘experience’ of Ighalo who called time on his international football is still relevant in the team.
”We have so many good strikers. We invited the last time, Awoniyi, we had Moffi, we had the other one Onuachu, like you know Osimhen of course is actually number one but we don’t have anyone like Ighalo,” Rohr told Elegbete TV.
”Ighalo is different, he’s a special player, he sees everything, he smells the football so I think our team love his maturity with his experience. He could help us much more”.
Osimhen has scored eight goals while providing six assists since Ighalo’s retirement from international football.
Meanwhile Osimhen was not on the scoresheet but won two penalties Thursday night as SS Napoli defeated Bologna 3-0 to return to the summit of the Serie A table.
The Nigeria international was fouled for the second and third goals both scored by captain Lorenzo Insigne. Fabian Luiz had grabbed the opener with seven minutes played.
Napoli lost their 100% record last weekend with a 0-0 draw at Roma after eight successive wins but Luciano Spalletti’s side were back to their best against Bologna.
Osimhen has scored 10 League games and still counting.
