The Garden City landlords engaged Finidi George following the sacking of Stanley Eguma towards the end of last season.

In what could pass for life goes on move, Finidi will be returning to the dugout just few weeks after quitting his job as Super Eagles coach after just five matches in charge comprising three friendlies and two world cup qualifiers against Benin Republic and South Africa.

Finidi is no novice to the Nigeria professional Football league as he managed nine-time Champions and two-time CAF Champions league winners Enyimba before joining the Super Eagles coaching crew first as an assistance to Portuguese Coach Jose Peseiro and subsequently substantive Super Eagles coach.

The former Ajax and Betis star led Enyimba to title success in the 2022/23 season.

Rivers United who emerged League Champions in the 2021-22 but disappointedly finished eighth in the just concluded season, gave reasons for choosing Finidi as their new coach.

Taking their X handle on Wednesday expressed optimism that Finidi will deliver, citing his wealth of experience.

The Man For The Job

”Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years.”

”His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023,” the statement read

General Manager of Rivers United FC, Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, while welcoming George, stated: “We are delighted to have Finidi George join our team. His appointment marks a new chapter in our club’s history, and we are committed to working together to achieve success.”

An elated George expressed his gratitude to the club, saying: “I am honoured to have this opportunity, and I thank the Sports Commissioner, the General Manager, and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win.

Finidi George’s official unveiling today is billed for 2pm at the Sharks Stadium.
