Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has vacated the Government House in Port Harcourt following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency. Sources confirmed that Fubara, along with his family and security details, left the premises on Wednesday morning.

A government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the move was in response to the directive suspending the governor and his deputy for an initial six months. The situation has raised concerns about governance in Rivers State as the newly appointed administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), is yet to assume office.

Security Presence at Government House

Despite Fubara’s departure, security personnel remain stationed at the Rivers State Government House. Two Armoured Personnel Carriers, which were seen on Tuesday night, are still positioned at the entrance, with a handful of operatives keeping watch.

A correspondent who visited the premises observed that military presence was light, suggesting a controlled transition. However, there was no official communication regarding when the administrator would formally take over.

Ibas Yet to Resume Duties

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), appointed by President Tinubu to oversee Rivers State during the emergency rule, has not yet taken charge as of Wednesday afternoon. Preparations for his arrival were ongoing, with about 15 soldiers stationed inside the premises.

Residents of Port Harcourt have continued their daily activities despite the political crisis, while political analysts are keenly watching developments in Rivers State. Many are waiting for Ibas to make his first public address to outline the administration’s plan for the state under emergency rule.

The state of emergency in Rivers State marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s political environ, as it is the latest in a series of interventions by the federal government since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.
