For the first time in the 96-year history of the Academy Awards that three out of the ten movies nominated for Best Picture were directed by women. Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives” are entries in a traditionally male-dominated category.
The remaining Best Picture nominees, including “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest,” contribute to the diverse landscape of cinematic excellence recognized by the Academy.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelThis milestone adds a significant chapter to the Academy’s history, given that prior to this year, only four instances saw two films directed by women among the Best Picture nominees. Noteworthy films from those years include “The Hurt Locker” and “The Kids Are All Right” in 2009 and 2010, “Nomadland” and “Promising Young Woman” in 2020, and “CODA” and “The Power of the Dog” in 2021.

It’s worth mentioning that Kathryn Bigelow, Chloé Zhao, and Siân Heder, directors of films in those respective years, saw their works eventually securing the Best Picture win.
Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) and Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) achieved recognition as the second and third women in Oscar history to be nominated for both Best Picture and acting in the same year. This accolade follows in the footsteps of Frances McDormand, who, at the 93rd Oscar ceremony, became the first woman to achieve this dual nomination and went on to clinch victories in both categories.
The recognition of women in multifaceted roles at the Oscars continues to break barriers, illustrating a progressive shift in the industry.

Furthermore, a notable proportion of this year’s nominated films feature women producers, showcasing a broader representation behind the scenes. Notably, Emma Thomas (“Oppenheimer”), Marie-Ange Luciani (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Amy Durning and Kristie Macosko Krieger (“Maestro”), Ewa Puszczynska (“The Zone of Interest”), and Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon (“Past Lives”) contribute to this significant presence.
