Oronsaye Report: Tinubu Gives Implementation Committee 12-week Deadline

President Bola Tinubu has set up a committee for the implementation of the recommendations of Steve Oronsaye report on Restructuring and Rationalisation of Federal Government Parastatals, in line with his administration’s quest to cut down the size of bureaucracy and save costs.

The committee has been given 12 weeks to complete review of the recommendations and submit its report.

A statement by Segun Imohiosen Director of Information, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the SGF, George Akume, made this known while inaugurating the committee on behalf of the President on Thursday in Abuja.

The Committee is to drive the implementation of the report which would involve the scrapping, merger, relocation, subsuming of some Parastatals, Agencies, and Commissions aimed at reducing cost of governance while ensuring efficiency.

This is coming twelve years after the panel submitted its report. Both former Presidents Jonathan and Buhari administration’s attempted at implementing the recommendations but failed.

According to the statement, Secretary to the Government the Federation will Chair the committee that includes Attorney General of the Federation/Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi; Minister of Budget & Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; and Special Adviser to the President on Policy & Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman.

Others are, Director-General Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Ibrahim Arabi; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Abubakar Gumel; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly (House of Representatives), Kunle Olarewaju; Principal Secretary to the President, Hakeem Okunola; and Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Richard Pheelangwah.

Akume highlighted the overarching principles of the Committee, which encompassed an examination of extant mandates to comprehend the prevailing roles, obligations, and goals delineated in the agency mandates.

Determine any overlaps, conflicts, or duplications in the goals between the various organisational units’ mandates.

In order to make sure the updated mandates complement the government’s priorities and strategic goals, the committee must also establish strategic objectives.

The revised mandates for the organisations involved in the restructuring should be clear, concise, and actionable. Additionally, they should ensure that the revised mandates adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and policies governing government operations.

Other tasks include engaging key stakeholders and gathering input and feedback on the proposed revisions to the mandates.

The committee shall additionally secure the requisite authorizations from pertinent authorities for the updated directives, proficiently convey the updated mandates to staff members and interested parties, execute the updated directives skillfully, and oversee their execution to detect any problems or obstacles.

“The President has given the committee a 12 week deadline to submit its report,” the statement added.
