The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their professionalism in the ongoing Ondo State governorship election. Speaking after casting his vote at Polling Unit 17, Ward 3, in Okeagbe, Akoko North West Local Government Area, the minister emphasised the smooth conduct of the election process and the peaceful atmosphere.

Tunji-Ojo also commended voters across the state for participating actively in the democratic process. “The turnout across the local government areas has been impressive. People are exercising their rights, and it’s a positive sign for democracy in Ondo State,” he remarked.

Reports indicate a strong presence of voters in major polling units, with 17 political parties contesting in the election. The main contest is between the incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Security Agencies Receive Recognition

The minister also lauded the conduct of security personnel deployed for the exercise. “Security agencies have been impartial and orderly. Their presence has reassured voters, contributing to the peaceful conduct of the election,” Tunji-Ojo added.

Local observers have noted the calm atmosphere in several polling stations, with minimal reports of disruptions.

#OndoDecides2024: BVAS System Enhances Credibility

INEC’s use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was another highlight of the election. Tunji-Ojo pointed out that the system ensured a smooth accreditation process. “I was accredited in just a few minutes. This technology has added transparency to the election,” he noted.

Voter Challenges and Party Responses

However, not all reports from the field have been positive. PDP’s candidate, Agboola Ajayi, expressed concerns over alleged irregularities with the BVAS system. “Some of our supporters faced challenges during accreditation. INEC must address these issues to ensure fairness,” Ajayi said.

Similarly, other stakeholders raised concerns over alleged incidents of voter intimidation in some areas. Despite these challenges, the election has largely been peaceful, according to observers.

What’s Next?

As voting concludes, all eyes are on the collation centres, where results will begin to trickle in. The election outcome is expected to shape the political landscape of Ondo State for the next four years.

With a strong turnout and largely peaceful conduct, #OndoDecides2024 reflects a commitment to democracy in Nigeria.
