The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) on Tuesday said it generated ₦1.2 billion as revenue across cinemas in the country in January.

This revenue was made by a total viewership of 322,833 during the same period, indicating a robust start to the year for the cinema industry.

Opeyemi Ajayi, the national president of CEAN, shared these insights during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Ajayi expressed optimism about the trajectory of cinema attendance, highlighting Nigerians’ sustained enthusiasm for the cinematic experience.

“For January 2024, we had total sales of ₦1,202,195,706 with total admission of 322,833,” Ajayi disclosed, underscoring the industry’s promising performance in the opening month of the year.

Reflecting on the previous year, Ajayi noted a commendable performance in 2023, with cinema revenues reaching ₦7.35 billion and total admissions numbering 2,606,891.

This marked an improvement over 2022 figures, where revenue amounted to ₦6.94 billion. Despite a slight decrease in admissions, the increase in average ticket sales contributed to the revenue growth observed in 2023.

Notable among the top-grossing Nollywood films for 2023 were titles like “A Tribe Called Judah,” “Malaika,” “Orisa,” and “Ada Omo Daddy.”

These films, among others, contributed significantly to the industry’s success, with “A Tribe Called Judah” emerging as the highest-grossing film of all time within the territory.

The year 2023 also saw significant milestones, including the highest December Gross Box Office (GBO) of ₦1.6 billion. Additionally, the industry celebrated its first-ever Cinema Day in September, which led to a substantial rise in both admissions and revenue on that day.

Despite these achievements, challenges persist, with rising operational costs leading to the closure of two cinemas in 2023. However, the opening of eight new cinemas demonstrates a continued interest and investment in the industry’s growth and development.
