Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian authorities to learn lessons from the just-concluded United States 2024 elections to strengthen the country’s democratic process.
Obi said the peaceful conduct of the elections should serve as an example of how Nigeria can reform the electoral process to stop irregularities such as vote-buying, election violence, manipulation of election results, and technical that such as network failure on election day.

Obi, who said he has congratulated Donald Trump for his successful election as the 47th president of the United States, expressed optimism that “his victory will reinforce democracy worldwide and contribute to fostering much-needed global peace”.
He also congratulated Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in the presidential election, for “her resilience and dedication throughout this political journey.”
The former Anambra State governor said Harris participated in the presidential race with courage and strength, but at the end, the will of the people prevailed.
“The peaceful conduct of these U.S. elections, along with the efficient transmission and release of results, should serve as an example and an inspiration for us here in Nigeria to abandon outdated practices such as electoral malpractice, vote-buying, election violence, and network disruptions that continue to hinder our democratic process.,” Obi stated.
He emphasised that no democratic election is complete unless the people’s will is allowed to manifest through the ballots.

“As a nation, let us collectively work to restore the integrity of our electoral system and ensure that our process for choosing leaders is free, fair, and reflective of the people’s true desires,” Obi admonished. “Congratulations to the United States of America,” he added.
Prime Business Africa had reported that Trump won over 270 votes required to clinch the number one position at the White House. The keenly contested election which held on Tuesday, 5th November saw Trump defeating his rival, Harris, who vied on the platform of the Democratic Party.
