On Friday, July 21, 2023, the cinema world witnessed an epic showdown as three highly anticipated films, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and Odunlade Adekola’s Òrìṣà (#OrisaBarbieHeimer), debuted simultaneously.
Initially, the Barbie and Oppenheimer films seemed to have the upper hand, backed by global campaigns and their cultural significance, overshadowing the local production of Òrìṣà.

Contrary to expectations, the Nigerian audience rallied behind the beloved doll and the Yoruba epic over Christopher Nolan’s dark tragedy.
Barbie made a grand entrance with ₦39 million in ticket sales, while Òrìṣà surprisingly surpassed Oppenheimer with ₦27.58 million, relegating the latter to fourth place with only ₦17 million.
The success of Barbie is hardly surprising, as the film capitalized on the pink craze, masterfully employing an all-out marketing campaign in Nigeria.
The film’s promotional events included a beach party, a fancy brunch event, a slumber party, and a star-studded premiere on July 20.
Òrìṣà also made significant efforts in marketing, hosting an impressive premiere in Lagos and subsequent events in various Yoruba cities.
The cast and production team actively engaged with fans through meet-and-greets in Osogbo, Illorin, Ibadan, Abeokuta, and other parts of Lagos. These efforts have borne fruit, as Òrìṣà now holds the record for the highest-grossing opening film in Nollywood and the most successful epic opening of the year.
In contrast, Oppenheimer struggled at the domestic box office, despite having a dedicated fan base of legendary Nolan supporters.
The film’s lack of significant promotional activities and marketing efforts may account for its underwhelming performance in Nigeria.
