NFF Shuns Local Coaches, Appoints Labbadia For Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation has made good its decision to appoint another foreign coach for the Super Eagles, and announced reaching agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia.

Labbadia’s appointment was disclosed in an early morning tweet Tuesday, 27th August, via the NFF’s X handle, tweeting as #thenff.

The statement read: “The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Super Eagles.”

“The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development sub-committee to appoint Mr Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles,” according to the federation’s General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

Labbadia becomes the 37th Head Coach of the Super Eagles after the resignation of former coach, Finidi George, who was unveiled as the Eagles’ coach in May 2024.

The Nigerian team will play a home game against Benin Republic on 7th September at the Nest of Champions, Uyo, before travelling to Rwanda for their next match three days later. The Super Eagles camp is expected to open on 1st September in Uyo.

Labbadia, who played as a striker in his playing days was born on 8th February, 1966.

He has managed about nine different German clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger.

A look his records however indicate that he spent averagely one season with each club. His last club was Stuttgart, where he was sacked after the team dropped to the last place.

Overall statistics of his report card as coach of the various clubs indicate that he supervised a total of 487 games, won 214, drew 103 and lost 170 with 43.94% finish.

Super Eagles, from available report, will be the first national team he will be handling. His first match leading the Super Eagles will be against former Super Eagles coach and current Republic of Benin handler, Gernot Rohr, on 7th September.

The last foreign coach in charge of the Super Eagles was Portuguese Coach, Jose Pesseiro, who led the team to second place finish at the last AFCON, held in Cote d Ivoire.
