News Central TV Correspondents Arrested In Mozambique Released

News Central TV correspondent In South Africa Bongani Siziba, and cameraman, Sbonelo Mkhasibe, who were arrested and detained in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, have been released.

A statement signed by the TV channel’s Director, News and Current Affairs, Louis Eke, and Director, Commercial & Communications,  Rosemary  Egabor-Afolahan, said they were released on Friday, 15 November.

The News Central TV correspondent and cameraman were arrested on Thursday, 14 November in Maputo while covering ongoing protest around the region.

The TV channel had earlier condemned the arrest of its staff who were on lawful duty and called for their release.

“We are pleased to announce the release of our South African correspondent, Bongani Siziba, and cameraman, Sbonelo Mkhasibe this afternoon, 15th of November, 2024. They were detained in Mozambique on Thursday, November 14th, 2024, while reporting on the ongoing protest around the region,” part of the statement read.

The media company expressed gratitude to media organisations, diplomatic representatives, and advocacy groups who worked hard for their safe release.

It specifically thanked the South African Consulate in Nigeria and Maputo “for their swift and effective intervention and to the relevant Mozambican authorities for their
cooperation in resolving the matter.”

It noted that the incident underscores the ongoing challenges journalists face in pursuit of the truth. It emphasised the need for authorities to recognise the rights of journalists and other media workers in carrying out their duties in society.

“News Central TV remains committed to promoting accurate and unbiased reporting across Africa. This release reaffirms the importance of protecting journalists and press freedom in
critical situations,” the statement added.
