Chidimma Adetshina, who was forced to withdraw from Miss South Africa due to a nationality row and xenophobic backlash, accepted invitation to participate instead in the Miss Universe Nigeria.
“I’m looking forward to participating in Africa’s most prestigious beauty pageant,” she enthused in a video posted to her Instagram account with a beaming smile on her face.
Despite being a South African citizen, people questioned her eligibility because her father is Nigerian and her mother has Mozambican roots. Many believed deliberately pushing Chidinma out of the contest in South Africa was because the attackers saw her chances of winning were high.
The South African Pageant has already taken place with Mia le Roux emerging winner and also becoming the first deaf woman in history to clinch the crown.
