Mike Johnson Declines to Answer Key Question
House Speaker, Mike Johnson, has drawn attention after his comments on Rep-elect Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress. On Tuesday, Johnson was asked whether McBride, who identifies as transgender, is a man or a woman. The speaker initially avoided the question, saying, “I’m not gonna get into this.” Later, he clarified his position.
“I rejected the premise of the question because the answer is so obvious. A man is a man, and a woman is a woman. A man cannot become a woman,” Johnson said in a formal statement. He added, “But I also believe that we treat everybody with dignity.”

Sarah McBride Prepares to Make History
McBride, a Delaware state senator, is set to become the first openly transgender member of Congress. She will be sworn in next year after winning a historic election. Addressing the controversy, McBride posted on X (formerly Twitter), “This is a blatant attempt from far-right extremists to distract from real issues. Americans deserve leaders who focus on housing, health care, and child care—not manufactured culture wars.”
McBride also emphasised the importance of respect in professional spaces. “Every day, Americans work alongside people with different life journeys. Congress should model the same respect and kindness,” she added.
Nancy Mace Pushes for Restrictions in Capitol Facilities
Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., has proposed a resolution aimed at limiting access to single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House office buildings based on biological sex. The resolution states, “A Member, Delegate, Resident Commissioner, officer, or employee of the House may not use a single-sex facility … other than those corresponding to the biological sex of such individual.”
Mace has been vocal about her stance, calling McBride a “biological male.” Responding to backlash, she said, “I won’t be bullied into silence. This is about maintaining common-sense rules in shared spaces.”
Political Reactions to Mike Johnson on Transgender Representative
Johnson’s comments have amplified existing tensions between progressive and conservative lawmakers. Some Republicans have praised his stance as aligning with traditional values, while others, including Democrats, argue that such views are divisive.

“This is not about gender—it’s about humanity,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. “Comments like these undermine the progress we’ve made as a nation.”
Broader Implications
The debate underscores a larger conversation about representation and rights in the political sphere. For McBride, the focus remains on policy: “Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more accessible. That’s what I’m focused on.”
As McBride takes office, the discourse on inclusion in Congress is expected to continue, reflecting broader societal debates. For now, Johnson’s statement serves as a reminder of the challenges ahead for the nation’s first transgender representative.
