Following the dissolution of the management boards of Union Bank, Keystone Bank, and Polaris Bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has appointed new Chief executive officers.
As confirmed in the statement by Sidi Ali Hakama, acting director of Corporate Communication, CBN, the following were appointed as CEOs of the banks: Yetunde Oni, Union Bank; Hassan Imam, Keystone Bank; and Lawal Mudathir Omokayode Akintola, Polaris Bank.
According to Hakama the appointment takes immediate effect.
Here are their brief profiles.
Yetunde Oni — MD/CEO, Union Bank
Yetunde Oni, who takes over from Mudassir Amray, the former CEO of Union Bank of Nigeria (UBN), has over 25 years of experience in the banking industry which is expected to bring to bear in the management of the UBN.
Oni is a former CEO of Standard Chartered Bank, Sierra Leone, a position she took in January 2021 where he was responsible for country leadership, strategy setting, and performance management for the Sierra Leone franchise of the bank.
Before that, she was in May 2010 appointed Head of Local Corporates and between in 2014 and January 2021, made the Managing Director & Country Head of Commercial Banking in West Africa for Standard Chartered Bank.
Oni began her career in banking with Prime Merchant Bank Treasury & Money Markets Group and later joined Ecobank Nigeria in 1994 as a Relationship Manager in the Institutional Banking Group until 2005.
She moved over to Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, in 2005 assuming the role of Senior Account Relationship Manager in the Local corporation’s segment.
By educational training, Yetunde Oni has a bachelor’s degree in economics obtained from the University of Ibadan in 1991. After undergoing Executive Trainings at Oxford University in 2016, and INSEAD Business School in 2017, Oni went further to study and obtained an MBA in Business Administration from Bangor University in 2020.
Oni is an Honorary Senior Member, Chartered Institute of Bankers, and a Fellow, Chartered Institute of Loan and Risk Management.

Hassan Imam – Keystone Bank
Hassan Imam, who is replacing the former CEO of Keystone Bank, Olaniran Olayinka, also has over 25 years of wealth of experience in various areas of banking. Prior to his appointment as CEO and MD of Keystone Bank, Imam was the Executive Director for the North Region at Fidelity Bank, a position he assumed in January 2020. In that capacity, he was responsible for Fidelity Bank’s commercial, SME, consumer, and public sector business in 19 Northern Nigerian states, including Abuja.
At Fidelity Bank, Imam had before rising to the top, served as Senior manager (2006 to 2008), deputy general manager (2008 – 2011), general manager (2011 – 2019) and executive director (2019 to 2020).
He joined FSB International Bank in 1998 before it merged with Fidelity Bank in 2005.
He had also worked with Liberty Merchant Bank as Head of Treasury & Consumer Banking from 1994 to 1998.
Imam attended Usman Danfodiyo University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1991.He also bagged two master’s degrees (Treasury Management and Banking & Financial Support Services) all from Bayero University Kano. He also has an MBA from the Netherlands Business School (2016).
He is a Fellow Institute of Credit Administration; an Associate Member of Chartered Public Accountants; an Alumni of Oxford University and Pan-Atlantic University; and a Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
Lawal Mudathir Omokayode Akintola – Polaris Bank
Akintola, who takes over from the CEO of Polaris Bank was until his new appointment, the CEO of Intermediate Equity Partners Limited, a Lagos-based firm. He also served as executive director at Sterling Bank (2014 to 2018), regional executive (2006 to 2014), and group head, treasury marketing unit, Sterling Bank (January to September 2006).
