The Origin Madam Koi Koi Episode 2 Review: Worth It Or Not

The first episode of Madam Koi Koi introduces us to Amanda, a young girl who finds herself in St Augustine Catholic College, a boarding school chosen by her struggling mother. Amanda’s attempts to learn more about her absent father are met with resistance from her mother, who remains tight-lipped about the topic.

Amanda’s first night in the school is marked by a nightmare, a harbinger of the horrors to come. She dreams of an evil entity lurking in the woods on the outskirts of the town, a place that will soon become central to the unfolding tale.

On her first day in class, she has a face off against four arrogant boys who consider themselves the brightest minds in the school. Her fearless display of knowledge puts her at odds with the boys, landing her on their blacklist.

Episode 2, aptly titled “The Spirit of Vengeance,” delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Madam Koi Koi. After the discovery of Rosemary’s lifeless body in the forest, a series of killings follow in quick succession. Sister Ruth, a member of the school staff, becomes a target of a group of boys responsible for Rosemary’s death.

Baba, a guardian of the school, comes to Sister Ruth’s aid but is brutally beaten by the boys. In a turn of events, the spirit of Rosemary appears and exacts a violent revenge on her tormentors. However, she spares Baba, recognizing his good intentions.

The episode ends with Sister Ruth assuming the role of Mother Superior, bringing a sense of security to the school. Amanda, after recovering from her traumatic experience, returns to a school that has undergone a transformation under Sister Ruth’s leadership.

WATCH IT OR SKIP IT??

While Madam Koi Koi’s attempt to shed light on the legendary ghost story is commendable, it is not without its controversies. One of the significant concerns raised by viewers is the prevalence of rape in the series, involving both teachers and students. This theme is disturbing and leaves many wondering why it is not addressed as a separate issue, given its gravity.

The series fails to provide a clear link between the spirit’s victims and their actions, leaving viewers confused about whether they “deserved” to be killed. The underlying question of why the town in which the story unfolds harbours such casual rape is left largely unaddressed. Viewers expect to see measures put in place to ensure the safety of the female students, but this remains a missed opportunity.

The narrative also leaves the audience wanting more depth and exploration of the legend’s origins and the motivations behind the spirit’s actions. It is a missed opportunity to delve deeper into a story that has intrigued generations of Nigerians.

Final Thoughts

The Madam Koi Koi series has received mixed reviews from viewers. While the first episode is praised for its execution, the second episode is criticized for feeling rushed and containing plot fillers. Many aspects of the second episode raised more questions than answers, leaving viewers unsatisfied.

Madam Koi Koi, Nollywood’s first foray into horror on Netflix, presents an intriguing but flawed exploration of a legendary ghost story. The series attempts to unravel the mystery behind the vengeful spirit, but its handling of sensitive themes and its execution in the second episode leave much to be desired. While the commitment to delivering scares is commendable, the series could benefit from a more in-depth exploration of the legend and its themes.
