In collaboration with Huawei Technologies, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has deployed four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor traffic and detect overspeeding. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced this during a press briefing on Thursday, stating that the installations would work alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other traffic management devices.
“These checkpoint sites are designed to detect overspeeding,” Osiyemi said. “One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while the other is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h. These checkpoint sites are strategically located to detect and deter overspeeding, which remains one of the leading causes of road accidents.”

Speed Limit Monitors to Ensure Compliance
Osiyemi emphasized that the speed limit monitors are meant to promote road safety rather than punish drivers. He urged motorists to comply with speed regulations to prevent accidents and fines.
“The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” he said. “This system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce the rate of accidents on our roads.”

The e-police sites for monitoring traffic violations have been installed at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These sites will detect various offenses, including running red lights, illegal U-turns, reverse driving on highways, and non-compliance with lane discipline.
“The fine for violating a red light is N20,000, while the fine for exceeding the speed limit is N50,000,” Osiyemi added. “Motorists who violate traffic laws, as detected by the ITS, will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service department, detailing the nature of the violation and the corresponding fines to be paid.”
Government Seeks Cooperation from Motorists
The Lagos State Government has called on all motorists to comply with the speed limits and traffic laws. The introduction of the speed limit monitors and e-police sites aims to make the roads safer for everyone.
The briefing was attended by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, representatives from Huawei Technologies, and other key ministry officials.
With the installation of these new speed limit monitors and ITS sites, the Lagos State Government hopes to reduce road accidents and improve traffic management across the city.
