Ayo Williams, the Ondo State Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, expressed the party’s approval in a statement released on Saturday in Akure.
“We applaud the Supreme Court for justifying itself and for its courage in rendering a definitive decision on this vexed national issue,” said Williams.
“The clarity it brings will, no doubt, spur further reform for effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of local government administration in the country.”
Call for Governance Focused on the People
Williams emphasised that the Labour Party would prioritise policies and projects benefiting the people once in power.
“The truth has finally prevailed,” he stated. “When Labour Party takes on power in this nation, policies and projects that will always put the people first will be the hallmark of governance.”
Financial Autonomy and Grassroots Development
The Supreme Court’s judgment is seen as a significant step toward improving local government operations. “The judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments is a welcome development for Nigeria’s democracy,” Williams noted.
“This decision is highly commendable and a step in the right direction. It is also central to grassroots development and accountability.”
Local Government Councils to See Increased Activity
The decision is expected to rejuvenate local government councils, which have been criticized for their inactivity and lack of developmental impact on local communities.
“Over the years, local government councils have become inactive and redundant in terms of delivering developments to local communities,” Williams explained.
