This follows President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, which came after significant pressure from senior party members urging him to reconsider his bid for a second term. Biden announced his decision to step aside on Sunday, endorsing Harris as his successor.

Harris’ candidacy will be formally confirmed during the Democratic National Convention (DNC) expected to hold in Chicago from August 1-7. Since Biden’s exit, Harris’ campaign has seen a surge in momentum, with millions of dollars in donations and senior party members rallying behind her bid.
Donors who had pulled back their funding over concerns about Mr. Biden’s age and health status have said they now intend to resume their support for the party. Notably, no challengers have emerged since Biden’s withdrawal, positioning Harris as the clear frontrunner to face Trump in the general election.
In a statement responding to the AP poll, Harris expressed her gratitude: “I am grateful to President Biden and everyone in the Democratic Party who has already put their faith in me, and I look forward to taking our case directly to the American people.”
If nominated, Harris, 59, whose parents are both Indian and Jamaican would make history as the second woman, after Hilary Clinton, in US history to be a presidential candidate, and the first woman of colour to achieve this milestone.
