French fans eagerly gathered along the Croisette from as early as 10 a.m., hoping to catch a glimpse of the beloved actor and perhaps secure an autograph or snap a selfie.

With posters declaring their love for Depp and chanting his name, the atmosphere was electric. Sporting a ponytail and purple sunglasses, Depp took his time to engage with the excited crowd, posing for selfies and signing autographs. The outpouring of adoration continued inside the theatre as he was greeted with a standing ovation upon taking his seat.

The swelling crowds on the Croisette made it nearly impossible to navigate, with security guards in luxury shops expressing visible annoyance at the growing throngs.

Fans from all walks of life had come from far and wide to be part of this momentous occasion. A group of teenage girls from the South of France expressed their enduring fandom, while a Swiss bystander held a sign pleading for a ticket to “Jeanne du Barry,” emphasizing her appreciation for Depp’s acting prowess rather than his personal life.

Despite the controversies that have surrounded Depp in recent years, particularly in the United Kingdom where he lost a libel case, his popularity remains strong in Europe and other parts of the world.

International film festivals continue to recognize his achievements, and he maintains a lucrative brand ambassadorship with Dior. While controversies have garnered attention, Depp’s dedicated fan base, particularly in the United States, has shown unwavering support for his work.

Despite the ongoing controversies, the Cannes Film Festival organizers stood by their decision to showcase “Jeanne du Barry.” Chief Thierry Fremaux defended the film’s inclusion, emphasizing the festival’s commitment to freedom of expression within legal boundaries.

As the premiere approached, the spotlight also fell on Maïwenn, who attracted attention for an incident where she spat in the face of investigative journalist Edwy Plenel.

This act came in response to allegations made against her ex-husband, director Luc Besson, by several women. However, the director and Depp displayed unity and solidarity as they walked the red carpet arm-in-arm, embodying their characters from “Jeanne du Barry.”

The film delves into the passionate and tumultuous relationship between France’s King Louis XV, portrayed by Depp, and a working-class woman, played by Maïwenn, who became his great love. King Louis XV, known as “the beloved,” reigned for 59 years but ultimately faced accusations of corruption, resulting in his unpopularity and downfall.
