Japa: Why Nigerian Youths Need Vital Skills For Better Global Opportunities

Nigeria’s unemployment rate has risen to 5 per cent, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently. This no doubt, accounts for why many Nigerian youths have continued to leave the country in droves to seek greener pastures abroad. Many of them try every possible means to leave the country despite that life abroad is not a bed of roses either.

The driving factor behind the ‘Japa’ syndrome is the belief that, although challenges are inevitable abroad, perseverance and hard work can lead to a rewarding and fruitful outcome. HOPE drives them to leave their father’s land to a foreign land in search of livelihood.

However, the reality is that unskilled migrants often face significant challenges in navigating foreign job markets and achieving financial stability. While academic degrees are essential, vocational skills can provide a competitive edge in the global job market.

Vocational skills refer to skills and knowledge related to a particular occupation or trade, especially ones that are learned through practice or training rather than through academic study.

In an increasingly globalized world, skills are the new currency that can unlock doors to opportunities worldwide. Professions like hairdressing, nail artistry, barbing, cars and other machine servicing and repair, interior decoration, event planning, catering and baking, tailoring, electrical repairs, makeup artistry, hospitality, Information Technology skills, etc. are not only in high demand but also highly transferable across borders.

Africans currently abroad can attest to the very high price of braiding hair. The beauty industry is a thriving global market, and hairdressing skills are highly transferable across countries. With expertise in hairstyling, braiding, wig making, wig fixing and styling one can build a loyal clientele, whether working in salons or having your clients come to your home or going to their homes, hairdressing not only provides a stable income but also offers opportunities for creativity.

Vehicles and machinery are essential in every society, and skilled technicians are always in demand. By acquiring expertise in automobile mechanics, machinery repair, or related fields, individuals can find employment in garages, workshops, or even start their businesses.

The art of makeup transcends cultural boundaries, and skilled makeup artists are sought after worldwide. Whether it’s for bridal events, photo shoots, or the entertainment industry, makeup artistry allows individuals to tap into their creativity while providing a valuable service. With the right techniques and an understanding of diverse beauty standards, makeup artists can thrive almost everywhere they find themselves.

Carpentry skills are invaluable in the construction and woodworking industries. From building furniture and cabinetry to framing structures and installing fixtures, skilled carpenters can find work in various sectors. With a solid understanding of carpentry techniques, tools, and materials, individuals can not only secure employment but also explore opportunities for self-employment.

The list continues with plumbing, welding, graphic designing, coding etc.

The importance of having a skill as a Nigerian youth whether with plans of travelling abroad or not demands persistent reiteration. No wonder the Ooni of Ife in 2021 admonished parents to add business and vocational skills to the formal education their children acquire in school. In the article from The African Courier titled “Why Nigeria desperately needs to bring back vocational training,” Dr Daniel Yakubu who is the founder and director of Hillstone Foundation – The Diaspora from Central Nigeria, a German-based computer specialist argued that “The modern workplace favours those with solid, transferable skills who are open to continued learning. Most young people today will have many jobs over the course of their lifetime, and a good number will have multiple careers that require new and more sophisticated skills.”

Regrettably, access to quality vocational training and resources remains a significant obstacle for many Nigerian youths. Financial constraints, limited infrastructure, and societal pressures often hinder their ability to develop marketable skills. Nevertheless, online resources like LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, and YouTube tutorials provide additional opportunities for skill-building.

Vocational and IT skills are a must-have for every Nigerian youth. With your skills, you can still make it big in Nigeria. The point is, if you must travel abroad make sure you have something of value to offer. Do not ‘japa’ empty-handed. Transition to life abroad is not without its hurdles.
