DeepSeek, a Chinese AI application, is making waves globally as it positions itself as a competitor to major players like OpenAI. DeepSeek’s AI assistant has become the top-rated free app on Apple’s US. App Store, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Powered by the DeepSeek-V3 model, the app’s rapid rise in popularity since its January 10 release has drawn attention across the tech industry.

Market analysts and tech enthusiasts are paying close attention to this unexpected challenge, as the app’s advanced models and cost efficiency shake the industry.

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 in Hangzhou, China, by Liang Wenfeng, a former co-founder of the hedge fund High-Flyer. The startup has taken the tech world by storm with its AI models, V3 and R1, which reportedly use a fraction of the resources required by competitors like OpenAI.

“DeepSeek has demonstrated that it’s possible to develop highly capable AI at a fraction of the usual cost,” said Dr. Lukasz Olejnik, an independent researcher affiliated with King’s College London. “The app’s accessibility, supported by open-weight models, is one of its most significant features. Unlike centralised models, DeepSeek’s open-source versions can be run locally, ensuring perfect data privacy.”

Why All the Buzz Around DeepSeek?

The recent hype around DeepSeek stems from a research paper that highlighted the R1 model’s reasoning skills. The model can rethink its approach to math problems and is said to be 20 to 50 times cheaper to use than OpenAI’s models.

Morgan Brown, Vice President of Product and Growth in AI at Dropbox, shared his excitement. “Training top AI models is insanely expensive. DeepSeek just showed up and said, ‘LOL, what if we did this for $5 million instead?’ And they didn’t just talk—they actually DID it. Their models match or beat GPT-4 on many tasks,” he posted on X.

Cost Efficiency and Market Impact

DeepSeek revealed that training its V3 model required less than $6 million worth of computing power, using Nvidia H800 chips. This efficiency poses a challenge to companies investing billions in AI development.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump described the rise of DeepSeek as a “wakeup call for our industries.” Speaking to House Republicans, he emphasized the need for America to stay competitive. “We need to be laser-focused on winning this race,” he said.

Trump also signed an order to strengthen export controls, aiming to close loopholes in existing policies. “We’re not going to let them get ahead without a fight,” he added.

Security Concerns and Controversies

While some praise DeepSeek’s innovation, others are cautious about its implications. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen called it “AI’s Sputnik moment,” likening it to the Soviet Union’s launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957, which triggered the space race.

However, critics like Bill Ackman have raised concerns about data security. “DeepSeek is a Trojan Horse,” Ackman warned. “TikTok, which was temporarily banned in the U.S., is just a toy by comparison.”

DeepSeek’s response to sensitive topics has also raised eyebrows. Reports suggest the app avoids questions related to Taiwan, the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, and the treatment of Uyghurs. These omissions have sparked debates about the ethical considerations of using such tools.

What Makes DeepSeek Stand Out?

One of DeepSeek’s most praised features is its emphasis on data privacy. “Organisations can deploy full models internally, ensuring complete control over sensitive information,” explained Dr. Olejnik. “This is far better than relying on AI tools hosted on remote servers.”

Despite its controversies, DeepSeek has become the top free app on Apple’s App Store in the U.S. and U.K. Its popularity highlights a growing interest in affordable and efficient AI solutions.

The Road Ahead

As DeepSeek gains momentum, the global tech community is watching closely. The app’s ability to deliver advanced AI capabilities at a lower cost has shifted the landscape, forcing competitors to rethink their strategies.

Whether it will maintain this momentum amid regulatory scrutiny and international debates remains to be seen.
