President of the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Mr. Tony Izuagbe, has warned that the current infrastructure inadequacy may hinder the adoption of 5G technology across the country.
Mr. Izuagbe stressed the importance of infrastructure and connectivity for the successful adoption of 5G technology. He explained that the rate of 5G adoption would heavily rely on the availability of the necessary infrastructure to support it.

According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), 5G subscriptions in the country stood at only 0.83% as of August this year, compared to 28% for 4G subscriptions.
Izuagbe noted that 5G requires nearly three times as many base stations as 4G, making infrastructure expansion crucial.
Despite these challenges, Izuagbe outlined the benefits of 5G technology, including enabling advanced technology in areas with high technology adoption and data usage. He emphasized that 5G is a great enabler, especially in the era of the Internet of Things.
The ATCON President also stressed the importance of ensuring connectivity in both urban and rural areas, advising that access to communication should be a priority.
However, while Nigeria is making strides in the rollout of 5G networks, the infrastructure gap remains a significant hurdle. Mr. Izuagbe’s insights shed light on the importance of addressing these challenges to fully embrace the potential of 5G technology in the country.
