Gabon President Nguema Imposes Holiday Restrictions

Gabon’s interim president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has imposed strict new restrictions on the members of his transitional government.

These measures, announced on Monday via press release 064, include a ban on overseas holidays for all cabinet members and a limit of one week of holiday leave.

The move has sparked discussions about whether Nguema is preparing to solidify his hold on power ahead of the country’s next presidential election.

A Year After the Coup: Nguema Tightens the Reins

The timing of these restrictions is significant, coming just days before the first anniversary of the coup that brought Nguema to power.

On 30th August 2023, Nguema led a military coup that ousted his cousin, Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had been president since 2009 following the death of his father, Omar Bongo Ondimba.

The Bongo family had ruled Gabon for over four decades, and their leadership had been marked by allegations of corruption and lavish lifestyles, including frequent trips abroad.

Since taking power, Nguema has sought to reassure the public that his military government is working in the best interests of the people.

“This measure aims to encourage a return to the roots and increased proximity with local populations,” explained Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi, the interim government’s spokesperson.

Exceptions to the holiday restrictions will only be made in cases of “force majeure”—a legal term referring to extraordinary events beyond control—or for health reasons.

A political analyst familiar with Gabon’s situation noted, “This could be seen as Nguema’s attempt to distance himself from the Bongo legacy and present himself as a leader who prioritizes Gabon’s interests over personal luxury.”

The interim president’s move has resonated with some Gabonese citizens who view it as a step toward greater accountability and closer ties between the government and the people.
