  • Key Appointments:
    • Nyesom Wike appointed Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
    • Festus Keyamo assigned to head the Aviation Ministry.
    • Dele Alake designated to lead the Solid Minerals Development Ministry.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated a total of 47 ministers to be confirmed by the senate, which made him the first president in history to ever nominate that high number of ministers in the fourth Republic (1999 till date).

In July and August 2023, the president sent  two batches of 28 and 19 Ministerial nominees and some of the prominent names that were in the list are; Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Dele Alake ( Ekiti State), Festus Keyamo (Delta State), Abubakar Momoh (Edo State), Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (Bauchi State), Ahmad Dangiwa (Katsina State) amongst many others. List of new ministers, their portfolio and biographies 

Below is a comprehensive list of  the current ministers in Nigeria and their respective portfoilios:

1. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy- Bosun Tijani

The position of the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy was previously held by Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim under the Buhari administration before the appointment of Dr Bosun Tijani.

  • Origin & age: Dr. Bosun Tijani, aged 46 was born on 20th July 1977 in Lagos state, Nigeria but hails from Ogun state . He possesses a dual citizenship as a citizen of both Nigeria and Britain. 
  • Education: Dr. Tijani obtained a diploma in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Jos,a masters degree in Information systems and management from Warwick Business School and a PhD in Innovation and Economic development from the University of Leicester. 
  • Career: Dr. Tijani is the Co-Founder and CEO of Co-creation Hub (CcHUB), created in 2010 and is the first tech hub in Nigeria and the largest tech hub in Africa. 

2. Minister of State, Environment and Ecological Management – Ishaq Salako. 

The previous holder of the position of Minister of State, Environment and Ecological Management under the Buhari administration was Sharon Ikeazor.

  • Origin & age: Ishaq Salako, aged 64 was born on 23rd July, 1959 and hails from Ogun state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: Salako did his higher education at the former Kearsley State College of Technology, Ilorin and obtained his MBBS from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. 
  • Career: He is a medical practitioner who has served as the Commissioner for Health in Ogun state. He is also the coordinator of the Ogun West Stakeholders Forum. 

3. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy – Wale Edun 

Before the appointment of Wale Edun as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy by President Tinubu, the position was previously held by Zainab Ahmed under the Buhari administration. 

3. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy - Wale Edun 
  • Origin & age: Wale Edun, aged 63 was born on June 25, 1960 and hails from Ogun state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: Edun holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of London, and went further to obtain a masters degree in Economics from the University of Sussex.
  • Career: He is a Nigerian economist, an investment banker, and a politician. He served as the Lagos state commissioner of finance under the governance of Bola Tinubu. He has also served as the chairman of the governing council and the board of trustees of the Trust Fund for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP). Edun’s career extends beyond economics and politics as he is a board member and the Nigerian chair of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, chairman of Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame and chairman of Livewell Initiative, a health-centred NGO. 

4. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy- Bunmi Tunji

The position of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy was recently created by President Tinubu.

  • Origin & age: Bunmi Tunji, aged 41 was born on 1 May, 1982 and hails from Ondo state, Nigeria.
  • Education: Tunji started his higher education at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where he studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering. However, in his third year in OAU, Tunji  went to the former University of North London, where he studied Electronics and Communication Engineering. He obtained a masters degree in Digital Communication and Networking from the same university.
  • Career:  Bunmi Tunji is a business and management executive with a successful career in ICT who ventured into politics and has served as a former member of the House of Representatives, representing Akoko North East/West Federal Constituency of Ondo State. He has also held the position ofChairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and served in the National Assembly as well.

5. Minister of Power – Adedayo Adelabu

Prior to the appointment of Adedayo Adelabu as the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman  held the position.

  • Origin & age: Adedayo Adelabu, aged 53 was born on 28 September, 1970 in Oyo state, Nigeria 
  • Education: Adelabu obtained a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where he graduated with a first class honours. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) ,the Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and an Associate Member of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He has offered courses in business schools such as Harvard, and Stanford.
  • Career: Adelabu is a finance guru and politician who has worked as the deputy governor of central bank of Nigeria and was the 2019 Oyo state gubernatorial candidate of the APC. Prior to his appointment as Central Bank of Nigeria’s deputy governor, Adelabu has served in positions peculiar to the banking and finance industry.

6. Minister of State, Health and Social Welfare- Tunji Alausa

The former Minister of State, Health and Social Welfare that was succeeded by Tunji Alausa is Ekumankama Joseph Nkama  who held office in the Buhari administration.

  • Origin & age: Tunji Alausa, aged 58 was born on 18 April, 1965 and hails from Lagos state, Nigeria.
  • Education: Tunji obtained an MBBS at the University of Lagos. He further proceeded to do his residency or postgraduate training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
  • Career: Tunji Alausa is a medical practitioner who has held the position of a Chief Medical Resident at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He has also served as assistant professor at Rush University Medical School, further specialised in Nephrology and Hypertension at the Medical College of Wiscon.

7. Minister of Solid Minerals Development- Dele Alake

Dele Alake succeeded Olamilekan Adegbite  who was the Minister of Solid Minerals Development under the Buhari administration.

  • Origin & age: Dele Alake, aged 67  was born on 6 October, 1956 and hails from Ekiti state, Nigeria.
  • Education: Alake obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and further obtained a master’s degree in mass communications in the same university years later.
  • Career: Alake is a journalist, technocrat and activist who served as the former commissioner for information and strategy in Lagos state from 1999 to 2007. 

8. Minister of Tourism – Lola Ade-John

The preceding Minister of Tourism before Lola Ade-John was appointed by President Tinubu was Lai Mohammed who was the Minister of  Information, Culture and Tourism.

  • Origin : Lola Ade-John is a Lagosian and a Nigerian.
  • Education:  She obtained her bachelors in computer science at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She further obtained a masters in computer science from the same university. 
  • Career: Lola is a banker and IT expert. She has worked as a System analyst with Shell petroleum and also had her fair share of working under the banking industry before appointment as the minister of tourism.

9. Minister of Transportation- Adegboyega Oyetola

The former Minister of Transportation, preceding Adegboyega Oyetola is Gbemisola Saraki

  • Origin & age: Adegboyega Oyetola, aged 69 was born in Osun state, Nigeria on 29 September, 1954.
  • Education: He obtained a bachelors in Insurance from the University of Lagos and further became a masters degree holder in business administration from the same prestigious university. 
  • Career: Oyetola is a politician who has flourished in his political career, holding positions such as governor of Osun state from 2018 to 2022 and also contested for the Osun state gubernatorial seat under APC and won.

10. Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment- Doris Anite

 

Doris Anite succeeded Niyi Adebayo  who occupied this position under Buhari’s administration.

  • Origin & age: Doris Anite, aged 42 was born in Imo state, Nigeria on 16 October, 1981.
  • Education: She got her bachelor’s degree from the University of Benin, in the medical field. Doris also pursued knowledge in finance, earning the Catalyst Financial Analyst (CFA) certification. 
  • Career: Anite is a Medical doctor and Finance specialist who has worked in different offices in the bank. She was previously appointed by Hope Uzodinma as the Commissioner for Finance and Co-ordinator of the Economy in Imo state.

11. Minister of Innovation Science and Technology – Uche Nnaji 

Before the appointment of Uche Nnaji to fill this position, Mohammed H. Abdulahi     was the Minister of State, Science and Technology under Buhari’s administration.

  • Origin: He was born in Enugu state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He did most of his schooling in Enugu state and attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. 
  • Career: Uche is an entrepreneur, businessman and politician who has been extensively involved in the Healthcare sector of the country and served in various political positions. He was the governorship candidate of APC at the 2023 elections but lost to Peter Mbah of PDP. 

12. Minister of State, Labour and Employment- Nkeiruka Onyejeocha 

Prior to Nkiruka Onyejeocha’s appointment, Tayo Alasoadura filled the role.

  • Origin & age: Nkeiruka, aged 53, was born on 23 November, 1969 in Abia state, Nigeria. 
  • Education : She obtained a diploma in social work / community development from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and also obtained a bachelors from the same University. Onyejeocha further holds a masters degree in international affairs and diplomacy from Imo state University and another master’s degree in shipping from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Oyo state. 
  • Career : She is a politician who has served as a lawmaker in Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives, chairman, House Committee of Aviation, and as the Commissioner for Resource Management and Manpower Development, Abia state. 

13. Minister of Women Affairs- Uju Kennedy 

The position of Minister of Women Affairs was previously occupied by Pauline Tallen before Uju Kennedy took over.

  • Origin & age: Uju Kennedy, aged 49 was born on 23 December, 1973 in Nigeria. 
  • Education : She earned an LLB degree from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She further obtained a masters degree in law from the University of Abuja.
  • Career : Uju Kennedy is a lawyer, an entrepreneur, actress and politician. She is the CEO of Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye & Co, and the founder of Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye Academy, an educational institution.

14. Minister of Works- David Umahi

Prior to David Umahi’s appointment, Babatunde Fashola occupied the position of the Minister of Works.

  • Origin & age:David Umahi, aged 60 was born on 25 July, 1963 in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering from Enugu state University of Science and Technology. 
  • Career: Umahi is an engineer and politician. He  co-founded Norman Engineering and Construction Nig. Limited and served as the chairman and CEO of Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd. , Focus Investment Nig. Ltd., and Osborn La Palm Royal Resort Ltd. Umahi has also represented Ebonyi South Senatorial District and served as the deputy governor of Ebonyi state from 2011 to 2015. He proceeded to become the governor of Ebonyi state from 2015 to 2023.

15. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development – Festus Keyamo 

Before Festus Keyamo,Hadi Sirika occupied the position.

  • Origin & age: 53 years old Festus Keyamo was born on 21 January 1970 in Delta state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He studied at Ambrose Ali University where he obtained an LLB degree and was later called to bar in 1993,a year after graduation. 
  • Career: Festus Keyamo is a lawyer, human rights activist and columnist. He has served as the director of Strategic communications under former President Buhari, and later served as the minister of state for Labour and Employment. 

16. Minister of Youth- Abubakar Momoh 

Before Abubakar, Sunday Dare was the Minister of Youth and Sports under Buhari’s administration.

  • Origin & age: Born on 27 November, 1959, 64 year old Momoh hails from Edo state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Benin, Nigeria and earned a masters degree in chemical engineering from the University of Lagos. Momoh obtained another master’s degree in public administration from Ambrose Ali University. 
  • Career: Momoh is an engineer and politician. He is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN). He has served as a former legislator of the Edo State House of Assembly and a former legislator of the House of Representatives for Etsako Federal Constituency, in Edo State. 

17. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation – Betta Edu

Sadiya Umar was the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs before Betta Edu.

  • Origin & age: Betta Edu, aged 37 was born on 27 October, 1986 and hails from Cross River state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: She completed her bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery programme at the University of Calabar and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health for Developing Countries from London School Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She further earned a master’s degree in Public Health in Developing Countries from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and a PhD in Public Health from Texila American University.
  • Career: Betta is a politician who has contributed to Nigerian politics having served as the Commissioner for Health for Cross River state, and the National Women Leader of the ruling party, APC. 

18. Minister of State, Gas Resources- Ekperikpe Ekpo 

Prior to Ekpo’s appointment, Timipre Sylva occupied the position.

  • Origin & age: Ekperikpe Ekpo was born between 1968 and 1978 in Akwa-Ibom state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: Ekperikpe started his educational pursuit in a local school around the environment he grew up in Akwa-Ibom. He however further obtained foundational knowledge that would aid his career in public service consequently. 
  • Career : He is a politician and public servant who has served in various political positions such as being a member of Abak, Etim Ekpo, Ika Federal Constituency in the National Assembly. 

19. Minister of State, Petroleum Resources – Heineken Lokpobiri 

Before Heineken’s appointment, Timipre Sylva occupied the position.

  • Origin & age: Heineken Lokpobiri, aged 56 was born on 3 March, 1967 in Bayelsa state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He obtained an LL.B from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, and a doctorate degree from Leeds Beckett University.
  • Career: Lokpobiri is a politician who has served as a former speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2001, Senator for Bayelsa West Senatorial District from 2007 to 2015, and as Minister of State and for Agriculture and Rural Development from 2015 to 2019. 

20. Minister of Sports Development- John Enoh 

The former Minister of Sports Development was  Sunday Dare , preceding John Enoh.

  • Origin & age: Born 4 June, 1966, John Enoh, aged 57, hails from Cross River state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Calabar and  holds an Msc in Demography. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management as well. 
  • Career: Enoh is a politician, lecturer, and farmer who has served as Member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from Cross river from 2003 to 2015. He also served as Senator for Cross River Central from 2015 to 2019. 

21. Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike

Prior to Wike’s appointment as Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Musa Bello  occupied the position.

  • Origin & age: Nyesom Wike, aged 55 was born on 13 December 1967 and hails from Rivers state, Nigeria.
  • Education: Wike obtained a Bachelor of Law degree from Rivers State University of Science and Technology and proceeded to earn a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Duties from the same university. 
  • Career: He is a lawyer and politician who has occupied political positions such as being the Chairman of Obio-Akpor local government of Rivers state from 1999 to 2007, served as Chief of staff to Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the then Governor of Rivers state from 2007 to 2011, became the Minister of State for education from July 2011 to April 2014, served as Acting Minister of education from September 2013 to April 2014, and became the Governor of Rivers state from 2015 to 2023.

Hannatu Musawa is the first Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy.

  • Origin & age: Hannatu Musawa, aged 50 was born on 2o September, 1973 in Katsina state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: Hannatu obtained a law degree from England and Wales University in UK and obtained a Master’s degree in the Legal elements of marine affairs from the University of Cardiff in Wales. She further holds a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas from the University of Aberdeen.  
  • Career: She is a lawyer and political activist who is recognised as a qualified solicitor in England & Wales, the United Kingdom, as well as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. She is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She is also the  founder of Hanney Musawa & Associates. Hannatu is known for her passion for advocating for women rights and the rights of others as well. 

23. Minister of Defence – Mohammed Badaru 

Before Badaru was appointed Minister of Defence, Bashir Salihi Magashi  filled the position under the Buhari administration.

  • Origin & age: Mohammed Badaru, aged 61 was born on 19 September, 1962 and hails from Jigawa state, Nigeria. 
  • Education: He obtained a bachelors in accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. 
  • Career: Badaru is an Industrialist and politician. He founded the Talamiz group, a business that explores various areas such as automobiles, manufacturing, agriculture, commodity distribution and animal husbandry.  He is the former governor of Jigawa state from 2015 to 2023. 

24. Minister of State Defence- Bello Matawalle

The former Minister of State Defence was Olusola Obada, before Bello Matawalle assumed the position on August 21, 2023.

  • Origin & age: Bello Matawalle was born on February 12,1969 in Maradun, North-Western State. He’s 54 years old.
  • Education: He carried out his primary education at the Maradun Township Primary School in 1979. He attended VTC Bunza for his Secondary education in 1984. He tjwn proceeded to the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos and later attended Thames Valley University in London.
  • Career: A Politician and teacher, he has also previously served as the governor of Zamfara State from 2019 till 2023. He served as Zamfara State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Commissioner for Environment, Rural Development and then Commissioner for Youth and Sports between 1999 and 2003. He was elected three times into the House of Representatives by his constituents Bakura/Maradun in 2003 and 2007 under the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and then in 2011 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

25. Minister of State, Education- Yusuf T. Sununu

Emeka Nwajiuba was the former Minister of State, Education during president’s Buhari’s regime before Yusuf Tanko Sunumu took over in August 2023.

  • Origin & Age: Yusuf Tanko Sununu was born on February 2, 1967 in Ngaski town in Ngaski LGA, in Kebbi State. He is 56 years old.
  • Education: He has two Bachelor’s degrees; Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), respectively.  Other certifications he has in Medicine, Obstetrics, Minimal Access Surgery and Gyneacology  are FWACS, FMAS and DMAS which he got from the College of Medical Sciences at the University of Maiduguri.
  • Career: He is a renowned Gynaecologist, Obstetrician and Politician.

26. Minister of Housing and Urban Development- Ahmed Musa Dangiwa

The former Minister of Housing and Urban Development was Babatunde Fashola, while Ahmed Dangiwa took over on August 21, 2023.

  • Origin & Age: Ahmed Dangiwa was born on February 10, 1963 in Katsina State. He is 60 years old.
  • Education: He acquired a Bachelor’s degree, a Master of Science degree in Architecture and a Master’s in Business Administration at the Ahmadu Bello University.  He also pursued education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. 
  • Career: A Politician, Professor and Architect, he was also the former CEO/Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2015 till 2022.

27. Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development- Abdullah T. Gwarzo

The former Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development was Abubakar Aliyu and the current Minister is Abdullah T. gwarzo

  • Origin & Age: Born on September 23, 1960, in Koyar Getso, Old Gwarzo LGA in Kano, Abdullah Tijjani Gwarzo is 63 years old.
  • Education: He carried out his primary school education at the Gwarzo Day Primary School in Kano in 1977. He then attended Secondary school at the Science Secondary School Dawakin Kudu in 1982. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree (Tech) at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Textile Engineering.
  • Career: Abdullah Gwarzo has served in various government positions which includes, Special Adviser to Kano State governor and later the Deputy Governor of Kano State from 2007-2011. He has also served as the Executive Chairman of the Gwarzo Local Government Council between 1997-1998.

  • Origin & Age: Abubakar Atiku Bagudu was born on December 26, 1961 in Kebbi State. He is 61 years old.
  • Education: He has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto. He also obtained two Master’s degrees in Economics and International Affairs from the University of Jos. 
  • Career: He is a politician who has served as the governor of Kebbi State from 2015 to 2023. He has also served as a Senator representing the Kebbi Central senatorial district from 2009 to 2015.

29. Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory- Mairiga Mahmud

Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu formerly held this position before Mairiga Mahmud was appointed on August 21, 2023.

  • Origin & Age: Mairiga Mahmud was born in Kano in 1990. She is 33 years old.
  • Education: Mairiga was a very good scholar which earned her a scholarship to a prestigious university to continue her education. She earned a degree in Law there.
  • Career: She is a Lawyer and political activist and has served in significant positions during president’s Buhari’s tenure, such as, Minister of State for Niger Delta and Minister of Labor and Productivity.

30. Minister of State, Water Resources and Sanitation- Bello M. Goronyo

The former holder of this position was Suleiman Adamu before Bello Goronyo assumed the position on August 21, 2023.

  • Origin & Age: Bello Muhammad Goronyo was born on January 1, 1966 at Sabon Gari Dole in Goronyo LGA of Sokoto State. He is 57 years old.
  • Education: Bello began his educational background at the Kofar Marke Primary School in Sokoto from 1975-1981. He then proceeded to the Government College in Sokoto from 1981-1986.   • Origin & Age: Abubakar Kyari was born on January 15, 1963 in Kaduna State. He is 60 years old.
  • Education: He schooled at the Kaduna Capital School in 1974. After which, he attended the Barewa College in Zaria where he graduated In 1979. He then furthered his education at the University of Tennessee, Martin US, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1986.   • Career: He is a politician who was a Senator representing Borno North Senatorial District from 2015 to April 2022. He has served as Commissioner for Water Resources, Commissioner for Works, Commissioner for Education and Commissioner for Home Affairs and Information at various intervals in Borno State. He has also worked with former Borno State Governor and Nigeria’s current vice president, Kashim Shettima from 2011 to 2014 as his Chief of Staff.

  •  Education: He graduated with a law degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1983 and was called to the bar in the Nigerian Law School in 1984. He then furthered his education by obtaining his Master’s degree and PhD from the University of Warwick, Warwickshire, England in 1987 and 1990, respectively.

He has  served as the Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population and Director of the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents (GFF) at the World Bank Group. He has also served as the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in Abuja. It is important to note that he was a former Minister of Health in Nigeria.

The former Minister of Police Affairs was Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi and the new Minister is Ibrahim Geidam.

He then acquired a Diploma in Accountancy from the Ahmadu Bello University between 1981 and 1983.   • Career: He is a politician who was elected  Senator in March 2019 and was re-elected the second time to represent Yobe East Senatorial District. He has worked as the assistant Director of Finance in the Directorate of Foods, Roads and Rural Infrastructure and the acting Director of Finance and Supplies in the Yobe Information and Culture Ministry. There was a significant turn in his life in 1995 as he did not only exit the Civil Service, he was also appointed the Commissioner for Youths and Sports and later, the Commissioner of Commerce and Industries. From 1997-2007, he worked as a Director in the State Finance Ministry and Permanent Secretary in other ministries, signifying his return to the Civil Service. In April 2007, he became the Deputy Governor of Yobe State. And, as a former governor of Yobe State he was elected for three terms, 2009 (when the incumbent governor died), 2011 and 2015.

Government Secondary School was the first secondary school he attended before he eventually completed his education at the Mbiya Secondary School in 1983.
